Ticking transmission??

Post by max71 »

This is something I've never heard before. Mainly in 4th but maybe is some other gear I hear a "ticking" coming from the transmission. It gets faster as the car goes faster. If I press down with a lot of force on the shifter I don't hear it anymore.

I have a fairly new cup and spring on the shift rod and the bolts are tight on the plate that holds it in. I've never heard anything like this. Its kinda scary but the transmission otherwise is just fine. It even happens in O/D.

Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe a ticking coming from somewhere else, resonating through the linkage and into the shifter?

If you're pressing down hard on the shift lever, you're also pressing down hard on the gearbox. So it might be something touching the gearbox or drive shaft.

I'll take a look. Its pretty bizarre. But in your opinion its nothing internal to the gearbox?

If it was an internal problem, it probably wouldn't stop when you press hard on the gear lever, unless the spring on the lever is slack, and the noise is being magnified by that.

I don't see how it could be something inside the gearbox since there is nothing in the shift tower that moves while you drive. Since the last thing you did to the gearbox was remove the pinion gear, that's where I'd start.

I don't think there's any issue with the pinion gear. Its very straightforward. It would work or wouldn't work. The speedo is rock solid. I will check to see if the speedo cable has shifted and it touching the box somewhere.

I don't think I ever heard of anyone actually wanting their tranny to be ticked off.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

I crawled under the car and checked to see if anything was touching the driveline or the transmission that was resonating through the box. I couldn't see anything that would be a potential problem.
