Followup to trashed axle! With pics!

Post by CJ Steak »

I know Steve and Chris saw my pics on MGE, but for some reason I was getting error messages when I attempted to upload them here (my computer's fault). The good news is I'm picking up a WW axle from a guy down in Houston on Thursday for the grand total of 75 bucks cash. It's out of a '72 BGT. The ol' B will be on the road in no time. :D And I can't wait! Having total withdrawals over here...

Without further adieu:

Yes Chris,
You certainly did a good job on that one, wow! You also did a good job getting a replacement for $75. Good Job!

I assume this is the axle that was posted here recently that made odd noises ? .

MGB rear axles are worthless , most of the time the junk tub is crushed with the perfectly good axle still in it :x .

I'm glad to see you'll be on the road again soon  :drive .

All that fuzz over a few missing teeth and some minor debris!??
It's obvious from the pics that there are plenty of gear teeth left that are fully intact and usable.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

And I was sure to make a big deal out of it too!

"BAH! HOW WILL I EVER GET THEM CLEAN! AAAAAAAAH"

I then rolled around on the ground in complete agony. Just like in California.

Or was that you that did that?

My memory is fuzzy now.

I actually drove the car for 40 miles after when I believe the initial tooth loss happened. Sometimes at speeds up to 80mph. If that initial broken tooth would have ran through the ring and pinion at those speeds, I'd have a nice shotgun sized hole in the diff cover.

When the R&P ate the tooth, I was doing about 5 mph or less and it almost stopped the car, then shot it into the diff cover. It's hard to tell in the pics, but I've got a considerable dent in the cover!

Chris, if only you'd persevered you could've indeed ended up with a very shotgun-like perforation of the diff cover.
That, however, wouldn't necessarily stop your progess...but eventually the lack of oil would've.
Guess how I know that?

I dunno, breaking a nail so far back that it bleeds is a certified manly injury in my book. It hurts like h*ll! Scraping your cuticle and getting grease in it however...

Jimmy - I had a friend convince me it was a good idea to weld the spiders in the rear axle of my '49 Willys CJ2A. After a weekend of four wheeling, I got one of the tires hung up in some rocks and busted a tooth (and didn't know it). As I was heading down the dirt road back towards my parents ranch, the rear end locked on the dirt and slid forever, then at the last second I heard a bang like a shotgun went off.

I was rewarded with a hole in the diff cover you could almost put your fist through. If I had thought about it, I would have kept the diff cover as a wall hanger. It looked awesome. Another junkyard axle later and the ol' Jeep was back on the road again. Sans Lincoln Locker this time around. ;)

Would you believe that my "shotgun-diff" was also created with a flatfender Jeep?
It was a highly modified '54, my second Jeep, which ultimately lead me to build my own (a '51) which is the one I still have.
My replacement diff was even cheaper than yours, however, as we (on a Sunday) went looking for abandoned cars along the roads - Volvos primarily, as they had the Dana 44s - but ended up outside a closed (Duh!) junkyard with an Amazon on the ground (no wheels) which we gently winched up enough to retrieve the axle and then set it back down gently afterwards.
No "good deed" goes unpunished, though, as later that day while cutting off the unnecessary bracketry I screwed up my back. It has reminded me every day ever since.
