Generator repaired

Post by grantour »

Taking some good advice from Steve, the 'new' 64 is up and generating again.
Long story short, when the radiator hoses blew after 8+ years dormancy, apparently the discharge fouled the internal workings of the generator. Kinda' like pouring sticky soda into it. Resultant residue seems to have attracted even more foreign dirty matter onto the armature and field 'irons' and brush contacts. A brush replacement, (they were showing about 1/2 wear), and cleaning with new bush thrown in for good measure, and the original generator is back doin' its thing and happy I might add! Moral of this tale is that an old part is a good part till' proven otherwise. Glad I didn't change anything.
(Before pic, to be painted now that its proven itself)

Good job! Nothing like a generator when it comes to durability.

Must have been a serious coolant explosion to take all the paint off the poor thing!
