Wheel backspacing

Post by Jimmy »

In case someone wondered what backspacing some of the common MGB wheels have, here are four examples.
These measurements are somewhat approximate, by the way.

Rostyle 14x5 is 4-1/4.
Minitor (basic MiniLite copy) 14x5.5 is 4-1/8.
Victoria British 5-spoke 14x6 is 4-1/2.
Panasport 15x7 is 4-3/4.

Two pleasurable results came from putting VB 14x6s on the Beater B;

A) The steering got noticeably lighter, presumably because of the lessened scrub radius.
B) Despite the 195/70R14 tires, nothing rubs. But it's awfully close on the left rear.

Those same tires started on Rostyles, and switching to the 1/2-inch wider Minitors sure helped handling and stability. Now, with the tread and rim widths even closer to the same, better performance yet is likely.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".
