Smiths Fuel Gauge Sender TB9011-Kit

Post by RodH »

Hi Guys:

I recently updaded the gauges in my bugeye to new smiths classic gauge (please don't hate me for not staying original, but, I prefer know what my fuel level is).

The sending unit is Smiths part number TB9011-KIT, I installed it a few months ago and it seemed to be working okay.

3 weeks ago after a fill up the gauge only went to 1/2 tank. I thought it was wierd, but, I'll get around to it.

Well Monday night I ran out of gas with the tank still reading 1/2 tank. I pulled the tank and sender and found that the arm is no longer moving up and down. There is a plastic bushing the arm presses into and it is very tight, I can move it by hand but it will not move by tilting the unit back and forth as it should.

Does anyone know if the smiths senders are compatible with the 10 % alcohol in gasoline?

Thanks in advance.

Rod

BTW Steve, great magazine spread on the MGC.

Hmmm... I know the plastic floats have had a few issues in past years so maybe the plastic in the mount is swelling? I would think that a newer sender would be compatible with any current fuel.

I've replaced the fuel sender in the bugeye with a new one, we'll see if it lasts.

I'm a year and half past the new sensor install and it seems to be working with pump gas. Hoping it lasts. Still I have no idea why the first one failed...
