This is a request for information to anybody willing. I was told to acquire the long 3/8" head studs (part number CAM150) intended for Minis as a replacement for my 1932 Wolseley Hornet Special rebuild. It turns out they are 1/2" too long, the head being 3 7/16" tall. Anybody with the inclination to check, I would like to find out if any other similar size engines have 3/8" studs and a head in the vicinity of 3 1/2" tall.
Also, anybody in need of head studs, CAM150, I have 14 of them, brand new for sale!

Robb I am not sure what is on the PA, but we can check that one this week if you want. It's parked a short walk from your house

Re: Head studs, 3/8"
If I recall correctly, B-Series engines as used in dozens of British cars including MGA and MGB use 3/8-16 studs. Length is another matter of course. I assume they can't be cut down?
I had to cut all 48 studs on my '39 because I was using acorn nuts. Each stud ended up a slightly different length in order to fit properly. That sure took a while!

Re: Head studs, 3/8"
Steve,
Yes, and I believe that the A series engines also use 3/8" studs, so I'm hopeful. Because of the importance of having threads and tensile strength as good as possible, the threads can't be extended after hardening/tempering. The threads are rolled rather than cut with a die. Obviously, the excess threaded ends can be cut off as you did.
I am changing the Hornet's studs from 5/16" (amazing that they work at all!) to 3/8", so I won't tap the block until I have the studs.

OK, I thought it was just a matter of too many threads. I didn't realize the shoulder was too tall. Try calling Egge Machine. I seem to recall they make studs. I can look up their info tonight when I get home.

Have you tried calling ARP? Or David Anton over at APT? The A-series that he built for me uses two different length ARP head studs. I bet there are a whole selection of lengths available if you contact them directly.

Westfield,
Yes, thanks for the thought. I did fill out the request form on their website, but never heard back from them. I will call them as well and see if there's a better way to find out availability.

Re: Head studs, 3/8"
I did finally locate head studs for my project through Kenny King (King Bolt in Covina). He is getting them from ARP. The sales guy that I dealt with at ARP was not able to find the size that I requested, instead listing several that were wrong, but Kenny came through for me and I highly recommend him for such things. I should have called him first!
