TR3 Speedo cable

Post by DaveC »

I found that the speedo cable on the Peerless was disconnected at the 'box end (see pic). It was not disconnected by having the adapter unscrewed, but in fact the adapter had pulled out of the knurled ring screwed to the 'box.

When I pushed the adapter back in, the speedo still does not work. I can test/replace the cable, and even the speedo itself. However, anyone know what if anything can I renew/service at the 'box end, with dropping the whole gearbox?

thanks!

Hi,
It's probably the angle drive. Dis-connect the speedo cable at the knurled nut where it goes into the angle drive, and then remove the angle drive from the gearbox by unscrewing the knurled nut that holds that into the gearbox. Both knurled nuts can be seen in your illustration. When you've removed the angle drive, check that the short cable protruding from the gearbox end of the angle drive is intact. It should be about three quarters of an inch long.

It appears that your handbrake is also interfering with the speedo cable. Change the angle when you reattach the angle drive so that the cable runs straight and clear of the brake lever.

Thanks, both

The short cable gearbox side of the adapter is missing and I'll have to check if it's stuck in the bushing.

Dave - I see what you mean - thanks

New adapter and washer fitted, and I now have a working speedo and mileometer

Dave - In the end the handbrake doesn't foul the adapter in the same location. There's about an 3/16th gap

Thanks all for the help
