Lug Nut Torque

Post by VWNate1 »

O-key then ~

The set of five new used wheels has been bead blasted & powder coated red by Vern's in Gardena , I installed a set of new steel ' lifetime ' Schrader valves then re mounted my tires as they're all in good shape .

As there was some concern when the left front wheel broke that the lug nuts weren't properly tightened (I'd used a torque wrench to 40 #) , I set them to 50 # this time .

I've been tooling around town this afternoon and all seems well .

Any thoughts ? . I trust you alls opinions here .

TIA ,

(it's good to be back behind the wheel of a Classic LBC again !)

I believe it varies a bit for different wheel and nut types, but I torque my MGB wheels to 60 lbs.ft. I believe they are a similar style to yours.

THANX ! .

The lug studs are very thin so I was worried about over torquing them .

Hi Nate,
The lug studs on an MGB are thicker than yours, so better check the shop manual for the correct torque. Midgets are the same size as yours.

Hi Nate,

I think Malcom is correct in the fact that the lugs on your Met are the same size as an MG Midget. My MK III Midget's manual that I have states that the Midgets lugs should be checked weekly with a tourque wrench set 44 to 46 ft lbs.
Hope this helps.

Yes , the studs and nuts are the exact same BMC P/N as Midget and 40 # was when they came loose so I expect I'll be staying at 50 # & checking them soon and occasionally thereafter .

THANK YOU ALL ! .
