FUN RUN INFO
Sorry for the delay folks. I'm slacking as usual, I know. So here it is...
Labor Day is right around the corner, and that means another excuse to join your fellow vintage motorists in Malibu for the 2012 Labor Day Run!
When: Monday, September 3, 2012 (meet at 8:00 AM, rollout at 9:00 AM)
Where: Malibu Colony Plaza, 23841 West Malibu Road (southwest corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Webb Way)
Event Notes:
This is a “fun run”, not an organized event. We are just a group of like-minded classic car enthusiasts out driving the same roads. There is no official leader, nor any car club or business affiliation. As such please keep in mind that everyone is responsible for themselves!
Although this is an unorganized fun run, please observe common courtesy within the pack. For those new to driving in groups, here are a few unwritten rules we all try to follow:
• Drive safely and responsibly at all times. Leave your ego at home.
• Try to position yourself within the group based on your driving style - slower drivers toward the rear, faster drivers up front. If you are unsure of your driving preferences compared to other drivers, start near the tail of the group and go from there. We stop to regroup periodically so don’t worry about being left behind.
• If you find yourself lagging behind and holding up others, don’t push it. Just wait for a safe place to pull aside and let them pass. Being stubborn only creates a bad atmosphere and we’re all here to have fun!
• If you have a modern family car, please stay in the rear of the pack. Many modern sports cars such as Lotus, MINI, Miata, etc. are generally accepted and even encouraged within a pack of classics.
Other Notes:
Many of the roads on this run are extremely twisty including Latigo Canyon, Tuna Canyon, Las Flores Canyon and Piuma Road. Stay alert! Latigo (the first climb) is the longest, slowest and hottest climb of the day. Some people turn off the route after this climb because of overheating worries, but there is no need. If you made it up Latigo then you’re past the worst of it.
Tuna Canyon Road is a very steep and twisty descent. Watch for blind turns and conserve your brakes! Also watch for slides, debris and construction barricades. Half way down it becomes a one-way road.
There are restaurants and coffee shops in the plaza for breakfast, but you should call ahead to make sure they will be open on the holiday.
Fuel is typically expensive in Malibu so you may want to fill up a few miles before you arrive. There is little fuel available on the driving route unless you take a detour into town.
There is a serious lack of restrooms along this route. There is no shortage of bushes but not much civilization! Your best bet for an actual toilet is on Pacific Coast Highway near Las Flores Canyon Road. Keep this in mind when you’re ordering that second cup of coffee before the run.
