The rogue early 1974 (late 1974 MGBs had rubber bumpers) MGB had a Dynaplastics top with pop out quarter windows. Steve has a picture of this top on his MGB Hard Tops page.

I thought the top was interesting because of the pop out quarter windows and because it isn't the normal factory or snug top you usually see on an MGB. In the 1970s it seems that all car makers were putting Vinyl on the tops of their cars. I think ruining perfectly nice roofs. I guess it was supposed to make it look like the car had a convertible top, but really I don't think it fooled anyone, at least I hope not. I even bought a car during that period with a Vinyl top, but only because it was a car I could afford. It was a nice fastback and I thought then and now that it would have looked better without the Vinyl. If you're interested about Vinyl tops, more information can be found on Wikipedia at the Vinyl roof page.

Yes! I added to the post with some photos I took:
Tanny earlier wrote:My son and I had a fun time. It was nice being with the group, you are a great bunch. Congratulations to Geoff for making a run in his MGA without being towed home. I hope you have many more runs without a tow. When Gene went to a tree and cut off a small branch Geoff and I were wondering what he was up to. Geoff went to see and I just wanted to close my eyes. ;) It was an inventive solution for his oil leak problem and made it a "proper" British car as it now contained wood.

To be fair, it's not the first VM tour I've made it home from under my own power. There have been others.

But it did improve my ratio!

I'll post more pics later, but a few that I saw as I dumped the files onto the computer.

Image

Great views as we drove. Awesome to see a vintage Corvette being driven, rather than on a lawn. =)

Image

Not every vintage car fan is an old guy. Most, but not all.

Image

the car my car dreams of being.

Image

Resting up before the drive home. @125 miles. Felt like more than that. I might need to start wearing earplugs....

Image

I kept checking out Tyson's Midget. It was a Midget that I have my earliest car memories with, my Dad had one when I was a kid. Definitely influenced my MG interest as an adult.

Image

Gene fixing his car with a tree branch. I was impressed.

Image

My route today, approximately.

______
edited to fix Tyson's name. In my defense, it was late when I posted this.

You know, the California Oak is a protected tree around here. I wonder if he's still a free man...

And thanks for the pics, Tanny!

Gene, you are my hero! Pure genius!

Had a great time on the run. Lots of great people and cars. Not sure how I ended up leading after the Rockstore, but it was a fun drive down to PCH. Hope I didn't hold anyone up.

At one point on the brisk downhill run to the coast with a mirror full of Warwick, I did wonder if Dean had inspected those brakes yet?

Geoff, my first thought when i saw you on Decker was that you had broken down...then you raised your camera. Good to hear the car ran well.

That was indeed a great drive. Happy to report that the Warwick made it back home with only a few new items added to the sort list.

While you were sleeping, the next morning we headed out to Death Valley in the Rover. Austin took the pictures, so the credit goes to him. At full resolution the colors are amazing. Here are a few driving related photos among my favorites.

Hope everyone has a prosperous New Year.

Dean

PS: The last one Austin took for you Steve:)

Neat stuff, Dean. Death Valley is spectacular. I've been through it a few times, always on car rallys, and always at a high rate of speed. I'd like to go back and explore it sometime, but I can't get Janell to go.

Do you remember when we ran out of gas in Death Valley in the Grand National during the Starlite rally? I think we had to make up something like 30 minutes on a 2-hour leg after we made an error. I remember driving very fast for a long time and we managed to make the next leg on time. That car was a lot of fun, but it got poor mileage. Good thing we carried extra fuel. :drive

Death Valley really is spectacular at this time of the year. Those are some great shots. The last time I went to Death Valley, I drove from Ridgecrest overland to the valley all on off road trails. That way you really see some spectacular vistas. You should try it some time, you have the vehicle.

I like how Dean put his own copyright on the photos. He knows his kid is more talented than he is, so he's stealing some thunder. :jester

I was wondering why the pictures had Dean's copyright on them.

I think Austin is too young to own property, so Dean is protecting him.

Thanks for coming to my defense Malcolm. Actually my file sizer puts those copyright notices on automatically, but I like the yarn about me protecting Austin better, so I am going to go with that one.

Traveling into DV via Ridgecrest sounds like fun. I think we would be up for it again this year if work doesn't get in the way.

Dean

PS. Larry the reason we carried 10 gallons of extra fuel, was precisely due to the time we ran out. Off-road we averaged just around 10mpg. Not much better on the highway, maybe 14. I have learned that there is not alot of "range" in Range Rover.
