Supercar Sunday 7-29-07 - Roll Call!
Who's going? I'll be there but I'm not sure what I'm driving yet.
For those who haven't been yet, Supercar Sunday happens every Sunday, but the last Sunday of each month is the "big one" where several hundred cars show up.
The gathering is officially from 7AM - 11AM but if you want a spot in the center of the action you have to be there pretty early. Most people are leaving by 10AM and gone by 10:30. Many of the cars head out onto Mulholland Highway afterwards.
The official web site is http://www.supercarsunday.com/

I want to go too!!! I haven't been to one yet and this Sunday might as well be the first. My daily driver Mini may not be show quality, but the fun of being there is the main thing.
I'm coming from Summerland near Santa Barbara Larry, so I may see you guys on the way down. I'll be aiming to get there by 7AM also.

It isn't a car show, it's just a gathering of enthusiasts. One of my favorite cars there is an old Stingray that's basically down to the bare metal with surface rust. And then there's the muscle car painted flat black with rolled-on stripes. Now that's in the spirit of the original muscle car! There's a neat beat-up RHD Toyota Skyline that shows up often, too.

Well, maybe not rusty but pretty close! Definitely a sleeper judging by what's under the hood.

The muscle car I mentioned is here on Page 3, second row:

When I got home this afternoon, I was going to get my Mini cleaned up a little, but first started checking lug nut tightness and found the big right front driveshaft retaining nut was loose to the touch. The split pin (cotter pin) is still intact and I don't understand how it could get loose without the split pin breaking first. I had found the same thing a few weeks ago before going down to the Lotus Open House and tightened it one slot more and reinstalled the split pin again. Now it's loose again and it feels like the wheel bearings are gone with a lot of wobble when you move the wheel/tire around.
I think I better stay home from the Supercar Sunday this time until I fix whatever is wrong. I don't want to lose a wheel on the freeway and get run over by a dozen SUV's so I'll watch for the pictures this time. Glad I noticed it now before finding out the hard way.

That's unfortunate Wayne, I wouldn't risk it either. We'll miss having you there tomorrow.
I took the B out this evening to get fuel and ran by the local Newbury Park Cruise Night, 70-80 cars. Some great cars, but mine was the only British car. It will be good to have a couple of "countrymen" there tomorrow...
Steve, that's definately a Vette, sans paint...I wonder if it saves weight?

Don't know if I described that very well. I guess it would also be known as the right front wheel hub nut. It is right in the middle of the wheel and holds the wheel bearings and all tight. Sounds like you are probably right about the bearing being the culprit.
I'll look everything over in the morning and see what I find. If I could just tighten it until I could get the split pin in the hole again and be safe, I would still try and come down there for Supercar Sunday; but I would rather be safe than sorry.

I don't blame you. If you have the tools handy, you could pull the hub off and take a look. Just keep the parts in order. Check the inner race inside the hub and see if it's been spinning in there. If so, you may need a new hub. At least that's how it works on other cars I've wrenched on.
Plus you can always come down in a non-brit car if you want.

Thanks for the info Steve. It will be interesting to see what's failed and I will buy whatever I have to and get her back on the road.
Since it is my only car and Bonnie is using her car tomorrow, I don't really have a way to get there this week. I will make it as soon as I get this resolved and safe again. My main goal is to be ready for the Labor Day Run in a month, so I have some time for that anyway.
