Old Photos of Old Cars
I ran across a bunch of photos with cars in them, from the early 20th century, showing the general area that I grew up in. Should be fun to guess what kind of cars they are. I can spot the Model Ts easily but I'm not positive about most of the others.

And this one just for fun, from 1925. Love the message on the wagon.

Steve - Great photos. Two seconds of searching on Gilmore Oil Company proved interesting. E.B. Gilmore was quite the race enthusiast - Gilmore Stadium built in 1934 in LA, Indianapolis 500 entries and a near 400 mph land speed record.Steve Simmons wrote:And this one just for fun, from 1925. Re: Old Photos of Old Cars
I found the land speed record car interesting, because in 1947 it became the Railton Mobil special and achieved 396.4 mph, driven by John Cobb. That record stood until, I think, 1966.

Now a few of Simi Valley in the early part of the 20th century
For added fun, who can identify the car in the first photo? It's a tough one, so I'll give some hints if no one gets it.

Neat stuff. I used to live a block from the old Santa Susana Hardware building. I've actually been inside, but didn't know it was that old. The street lamps are no longer there.

You got the year right. Or at least I think it is right. I do know that this vehicle was being manufactured in 1905.

Not a steam car. I do know that they made both a 2 and 4 cylinder version.

Re: Old Photos of Old Cars
Steve,
It's a Tourist like this one, made about 1908. It is two cylinders under the seat. This one is being worked on by Loren Burch in Pasadena. I was just there this morning to check out his MGTC project.
There's at least one Pope Hartford in those photos.

Re: Old Photos of Old Cars
Wow. $1,700 in 1905 is equivalent to $45k today. Not many creature comforts for all that cash. Mobility came at a high price.
Don't suppose they financed it for 6 years, do ya? No wonder they got their picture taken.

Re: Old Photos of Old Cars
This isn't that old (maybe early 60's) but what are the odds that in a random photo of the 101 freeway through L.A. there would be an MG TD and and MGA driving next to each other?

Cool photo. You know it is before 63 as all the cars are still wearing their yellow plates.

Also, perhaps a TR3 in front of the MGA?
Good eye, Dean. It looks like a '59 or '60 is the newest car model I can see.

I was thinking a Bug Eye from the tail light placement and shape.
I also was laughing at the Ford that is taking two lanes of traffic up...Probably looking at the MG's

So here are a few old car photos I recently scanned from an album of photos that I bought as an album, probably 8 years ago and forgot about until a recent "spring" cleaning.

Re: Old Photos of Old Cars
Following up on the photo of the 101 with the two British cars, I just came across this one showing what could possibly be an MG TD on the left. Hard to tell, but it's smaller than the other cars and has a tan roof, suggesting convertible. Shape looks about right. It was labeled as 1940's but looks like early 50's to me.
I also found this great old photo showing the birth of the tract home in Southern California. This one was titled "moving in day" or something similar. What a great view of a unique period in American history.
Finally, here is a photo from 1936 of old route 99 (San Fernando Road) at Fletcher Street in the Northern portion of the San Fernando Valley. I located where the photo was taken and then grabbed a Google Street View. Note the Van De Kamp's Bakery building is still there, as is the Standard gas station (Chevron) which is still in business!

On the right in the front of the picture in a brownish tan is a 1952-54 Austin SomersetSteve Simmons wrote:Following up on the photo of the 101 with the two British cars, I just came across this one showing what could possibly be an MG TD on the left.
