That color postcard of The Hollywood Freeway was in 1954 IIRC , I have the same shot / angle in B & W from 1953 on my work 'puter , it's very nice indeed .

That is a seriously long 1936 traffic jam at San Fernando and Fletcher. And almost 80 years later their offspring are lined up six a breast for miles on the 405.

Just found this guys site from the same period my car was racing at Silverstone, check out the people who were club racing in the morning and then step into a formula 1 car the next day !
There were a lot of 6 hour sash relay races in those days, Octagon Stable Racing team being one of the entries. Also great period fashions if you plan on going to Goodwood !

cool stuff

Heres a link to old photos from my hometown. Quite a few street scenes showing the cars of the day as well as trams and ferries for those enthusiasts as well.

Anyone know the address of this place? I'd like to buy everything. ;)

These are all brand new cars that burned to the ground at the 1929 LA Auto Show.

I think this is the same place...

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/ref/c ... 0/id/92518

If you check google maps you can still see the open lot, but it looks like some of it is now covered over.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/3715+ ... f6e0f12c69

How did all those cars catch fire at the auto show?

You can get lost in the digital photographs in the USC library. If you search the The Dick Whittington collection for "insurance" you not only find the cool car photos, but the paperwork that shows he was being paid $3 to $4 dollars to photograph the cars and create 8x10 prints for his insurance customers.

That site is deadly. I try not to go there unless it's late at night and I don't have to get up early in the morning. CSUN also has one just as deadly, with mostly San Fernando Valley images.

The fire supposedly started from an electrical short. The repair garage was actually right next door, near the corner of Hill St. and Washington Blvd. The show back then was in large tents. I guess there wasn't a building large enough to handle hundreds of cars inside.

Driving South on the 405 toward Sepulveda Pass in 1961. Wasn't called the 405 yet, apparently. Interesting what type of car just happened to be in front of the camera. Also interesting that it has a British license plate holder with a CA plate. the MGA is a 1956-58 model. I wonder if that carpet ever fell out of the car ahead of him?

Victor Girard, surveying land for a new community which would become Woodland Hills. Photo is from 1924, and the car is a 1924 Packard. The photo is almost certainly taken near the present-day intersection of Topanga Canyon Blvd and Ventura Blvd.

That's a great one. The road looks so much more adventurous like that. Not sure I'd want to do it in a rainstorm though.

Downtown Van Nuys, 1911. The lucky ones have cars!

Photo taken at Sherman Way and Virginia Street. Virginia Street is the present day Sylvan Street. One source notes that Sylvan runs the wrong way for that to be true, however Sherman Way used to make a North/South jog and Sylvan would have crossed it in this location. So Virginia became Sylvan, and best I can tell the North/South section of Sherman Way became Van Nuys Blvd.
