Tom,

That's two weeks away. Don't you think it's a little early to ask Steve about Labor Day?

I'm looking forward to Labor Day too.

:pimp:
:drive We can always do the same Labor Day run that we have done for the past years. It is a good run and leaves us time to have lunch at the Rib Ranch after. That is  with me.
Meet at Malibu Colony at 8:30 and leave around 9:30.

I'm keeping the day open, and cautiously optimistic that with lots of help from Stewart, I might be narrowing in on the random and infuriating running issues that have been plaguing the MG for a long time.

Cross your fingers and I might be there.

Wouldn't hurt to have tanny preform an exorcism as well.

Does that mean that we have to bring our own copy of the directions?

Every day for me. My car is my daily driver. It's my break from all the automation in my life.

Same here. I don't own anything made after the 60's. Computers, automation and stereos make cars not fun. ;)

I'm sure "someone" will have route sheets. Should be a small group anyway since the run isn't being globally advertised.

:pimp: If the route is unchanged, then I can provide a pile of route sheets on the ground by my car. :drive

I guess my evacusump works better than expected: the valve cover gasket got sucked into the top of the engine and all the oil pumped out. Either that or silicone gaskets have installation secrets that I don't know about.... Anyway I got as far as Topanga and Mulholland and returned home via AAA. I am going to clean up the valve cover and go back to one of the cork versions I have on the shelf. BTW, it is a stamped steel valve cover and not the alloy type. To use the alloy one I need to relieve my rockers as there is contact internally.

Oh well, it looks like a nice morning for a drive and I hope you all have fun.

:pimp: :drive Sorry to hear about the valve cover. It was a great drive and some even smoked the breaks on the turns. Pictures to come.

Second attempt at replying....

I'm pleased to hear all had fun , sorry I missed it but I just got back from Paradise , Ca. ~ a very nice place indeed .

I went to buy a newer , larger engine for my old pickup truck ~ on the way my brakes broke but I didn't break anything else , just oil fouled the spark plugs nearing Paradise .

If you glue the rockerbox gasket to the box's lip , they won't suck in .

Besides being a little warm at times, it was a fun day! I counted 22 cars at the start, with an overpowering showing of MGs. Here's the breakdown...

12 MG - 4 MGB, 4 MGB GT, 1 MGA, 1 Midget, 1 TC, 1 MGC GT
2 Porsche - 912
1 Datsun - 1600 Roadster
1 Riley - Elf
1 Peerless - GT
1 Triumph - TR6
1 Lotus - 7
1 Morgan - Plus 8
1 BMW - 528E
1 Jaguar - XKE

Re : Gasketing

Post by VWNate1 »

If the gasket and metal surface are not Hospital Clean the gasket cannot stick .

I use a variety of glues , mostly Gasket Shellack .

If your evacusump works well enough to suck in the gasket , how is it pi$$ing out oil ? .

Maybe your sump is pressurized ? .

The two Porches were 912s. On with a two liter baja engine and the other with a 911 six. But both were 912s. Will put up photos later if I feel better.

With the small exception of gravel on Latigo Canyon the run was glorious! Many wonderful roads and Latigo Canyon was fun even with the rooster tail of gravel coming up from Steve's MGC. I kept my distance. :) Great roads, the traditional smoking of the brakes at the end of Tuna Canyon, fine food at rib ranch, and great company. A glorious day!

Thank you all.
