Brilliant! That's the way to race a Mini. They don't seem troubled to go wheel to wheel in $35,000 to $60,000 cars with many of them being worth more than that and with tons of history too. Love it. I guess I am a little biased

That Jaguar video touched on a lot of interesting areas. The car is about as close as you can get to not being a replica. It's also so far better built than an original that it's no different than over-restoring a vintage one. So yes, it's built as authentically as possible but still not the same as an original.

What we are left wondering is how they came up with the running gear. Was it also built new, or is the engine, gearbox, suspension, etc restored original parts? Would have been nice to see more of that stuff. But a great video nonetheless.

Now the Mini racing, that was just a brilliant level of fun. Fantastic race.

This is a fun though long video. That Lotus 7 must have a realty strong engine. Bad brakes, lots of over steer, and passing.

First Time Out (Lotus 49) - 1967

This film tells the story of the legendary Lotus 49, when it won the Zandvoort Grand Prix at its first outing.

Featuring drivers such as Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, and Jim Clark, this film captures a unique moment in the history of motor racing.

Jim Clark wins after having never driven the car until practice. Graham Hill DNFs.

Okay, I had too much time tonight waiting for my wife to return from The Pageant of the Masters. She and a coworker went to see it and Jane was the designated driver. She got back before I started to watch the video of the 1955 Belgium GP F1 race. What a fascinating video. The lack of safety. No seat belts or driver suits. They wore polo or T-shirts with slacks. Amazing. The ditches beside the road and 120 MPH lap times. The tires and drivers were skinny, but the head of the Mercedes team was huge.

While the Mercedes dominated the race, I believe it was mostly because of Fangio and Moss. The third Mercedes driver was mid field until it broke. It is well worth the 29 minutes to watch the video.

It is so weird to see Francorchamps in such a primitive way, it looks just like regular roads as apposed to how it looks now.

Some of my favorite lines are in this short movie. :) The Riverside track is so barren in 1960.

Enjoy,

Dean

Here is some history about Lance Reventlow pulled from a CNN article.

"(CNN)He was a wealthy playboy who counted movie icon James Dean among his friends and Hollywood actresses for wives.

But when Lance Reventlow, an heir to the Woolworth retail fortune, led the first U.S. team to compete in a Formula One World Championship there was no fairytale ending. Instead, his dreams of high-speed glory came spluttering to a halt.

Reventlow's Scarab might not have won any prizes then, but the marque's cars have become collector's items and will shortly go up for sale at the UK's Goodwood Revival meeting on September 12 for an eye-watering $3.5 million.

London auctioneers, Bonhams are handling the sale of both racing cars and their Fiat transporter, with Reventlow's car alone expected to fetch around $1.5 million.

Lance Reventlow ploughed his family riches into the Scarab racing team.

"The Scarab team cars were fantastically quick, but unfortunately for Reventlow, not quick enough in their development," Bonham's auctioneer James Knight said in a statement.

"These Scarabs are spectacular and beautiful Grand Prix cars with a proven race winning record at historic motor racing events."

Reventlow was the only son of Barbara Hutton, a well-known American socialite who counted Hollywood star Cary Grant among her seven husbands and whose troubled private life earned her the moniker "Poor Little Rich Girl."

Her son, whose father Count Kurt von Haugwitz-Reventlow was Hutton's second husband, also mixed in similarly swanky circles.

Reventlow was married twice, first to actress Jill St. John — best known for playing Bond girl, Tiffany Case opposite Sean Connery in the 1971 film "Diamonds Are Forever" — and latterly Cheryl Holdridge, an original cast member of "The Mickey Mouse Club."

He christened the team Scarab after the Egyptian "good luck" beetle, but good fortune was in short supply as the American team endured a misfiring season in 1960.

He and fellow driver Chuck Daigh made their debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, but failed to qualify for the race later won by Britain's Stirling Moss driving a Lotus.

Powered by a V8 Chevrolet at the front, the Scarab cars built in 1959 were fast but not as quick as the rear-engine Cooper Climax driven by Jack Brabham which had better roadholding.

The famous British racing team became the first to win the world title with an engine towards the rear. Rival F1 teams would quickly follow suit, leaving Sacrab to fight an almost unwinnable battle.

Daigh and Reventlow persevered, making it to the starting grid at the Belgium Grand Prix -- qualifying 16th and 18th respectively -- only to see Reventlow retire with engine trouble after one lap.

Daigh didn't last much longer, succumbing to the same problem 15 laps later.

A 10th place for Daigh at their home grand prix, held at California's Riverside International Raceway, proved to be both a high point but also the closing curtain on Scarab's brief F1 adventure.

There would be no happy ending for Reventlow off the track either.

In 1972, he was killed when the Cessna aircraft he was a passenger in crashed in Aspen, Colorado. He was 36."

Highway 33 is one of my favorite roads for going North, but it's hardly one of the greatest roads in America. You would be insane to choose it over Route 1. And the reason why no one is on it is because it's in the middle of nowhere and doesn't go anywhere interesting (unless you're going to Buttonwillow). You can turn off onto other great roads but they don't go anywhere interesting either. The only way to make a good day run out of 33 is to make it a really big loop that takes an entire day, in order to avoid I-5 and the like, and most people aren't interested in beating themselves up like that. My original "Ironman Run" used 33 in this manner and it was a whole day of driving nirvana, but it isn't something you want to do on a regular basis! ;)

I used to love a lot of these roads before people started posting them on the internet and making them popular and trendy. Many of my favorite roads are now crowded, and I kind of regret introducing so many people to them over the years because each of them introduced dozens more. Just 20 years ago, absolutely no one knew about probably a dozen roads that I now miss enjoying. I just took a group on two of my favorite roads up in SLO County but most weren't locals so they won't be clogging them up. Probably won't even remember where they are. :jester

The eventual result of videos like this will be more police presence on 33. :(

Center steering in the middle of the car. Track wider than the wheelbase. Scary.
