Seat belts

Post by Fifty Six MGA »

When I first started taking Hazel for rides in the MG, I figured out a way to anchor her child seat in there, effectively giving her a 5 point harness. She's outgrown that seat now, and it's got me thinking about shoulder or 4 point belts.

She doesn't ride in the MG often, and I know it'll never be as safe as a modern car, but she loves it and I want to continue sharing it with her, and Margot. I picked her up at Kindergarten the other day, and she LOVED it.

On the way home, I had to brake pretty hard to avoid an idiot. Not a full full stop, but braking harder than normal and enough she jerked forward not super far from her head to the dash. It made resolve to sort something more secure than the existing lap belts.

Anyone have experience/suggestions/advice?

You can buy 3-point belts from the usual suppliers. Not sure how well a 4-point would work on someone that small. Of course even with 3-point belts you have the problem of no good mounting point for the shoulder strap. Maybe duct tape her to the seat back?

Well you could do the three point and if you have headrests on your model I know that Moss carries a little shoulder strap guide that mounts under the headrest. It was made by a guy over on MGE. I remember watching the update thread as he built it. Seemed that everyone liked it.

The mounting shown on the MGA site above would probably be fine for a young child, but not for an adult imho. The mounting point needs to be above a person's shoulder or you risk serious injury in an accident! If the seat back is above your shoulder and the belt goes over the seat back then that's probably ok. You just don't want that sudden and violent down force.

Hi Groff,

The lap belt and a beach ball in front of her...... :jester .........just kidding.

The first one suggested by Tannyo is most likely the only one that is some what safe but she most likely still needs a child seat do to her size and weight. Maybe you can make a booster seat that would fit on the passenger seat and is restrained by a lapbelt but has a full five point harness that fits her.

Hope this give you some ideas.
