2016 Miglia Contorti - Twisted Miles

Post by tannyo »

Since 2012 I've been going on the Carrera California. Unfortunately last year they seem to have stopped doing the run. I sent an email to Rex and Charles this year, but did not get a response. So Doug and I were talking (a dangerous activity, I know) and decided to do a run. Here's Doug's description:
In Italian, "Miglia Contorti" means "twisted miles." Join us for 299 twisted miles over 2 days on Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, with an overnight stop in Borrego Springs, CA, in the heart of the Anza-Borrego desert.

Meet Saturday, November 19, in the parking lot of the Albertson's Shopping Center at the corner of Chapman Ave and Jubilee Rd, near the Chevron (good opportunity to gas up).

8544 E Chapman Ave
Orange, CA 92869.

Meet at 8:00 a.m.; rollout at 9:00 a.m.

Roads on Saturday include such twisty bliss as Modjeska Grade, Live Oak Canyon, Trabuco Canyon, Ortega Hwy, De Luz Rd, Sage Rd, Wilson Valley, Wynola Rd, Banner Grade and more.

Overnight at Stanlund's Motor Inn
2771 Borrego Springs Rd
Borrego Springs, CA 92004

(760) 767-5501

Dinner Saturday evening at Big Horn Bar & Grill
221 Palm Canyon Dr, Borrego Springs
(Corner of S22 & Palm Cyn Dr, at Palm Cyn Hotel & RV Resort)

Roads on Sunday will include Montezuma Valley Rd, East Grade Road, Lilac Rd, Couser Canyon, Rice Canyon and more.

Run concludes around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 20, with lunch at Temecula Pizza Co.
44535 Bedford Ct
Temecula, CA 92952

(951) 694-9463
You're on your own for expenses. When you call Stanlunds Inn tell them you're with the Carrera Group. If we get 7 rooms they'll give us a discount. If they are full you can call the Oasis or more expensive Palms.

Borrego Springs has a bunch of cool metal sculptures.

Pictures from the last Carrera California in 2014. We will be going on some of the same roads.

Please RSVP at tannyo@gmail.com so I know how many route sheets to print.

Finally, someone doing it right... without profit! You have my vote. Unfortunately I can't be there, as I have commitments all weekend, plus I have to pick up a large part at the MG swap meet.

It really was short notice this year. Next year we plan on giving more notice. Because they aren't doing the Carrera California, and I didn't know until earlier this month, and Doug is OCD about the route, notice is short. We plan on doing this next year on November 11-12, the second weekend of November.

Maybe you can make it next year.

To those of you interested in attending this run, in case it isn't clear:

The first step is to secure overnight accommodation in Borrego Springs for this coming Saturday night. This is the time of year when cooler temperatures make the desert popular with off-roaders, and the most affordable motels in Borrego Springs can book up fast on weekends.

Stanlund's Inn is our "official" headquarters motel, (760) 767-5501. At this motel, you can mention you're with the "Carrera Car Club" (the group that used to do this run), and they'll note it on your reservation. As Tanny mentioned, if our group books 7 rooms or more (there were 8 available as of yesterday), we'll get a discount.

If Stanlund's is full, the next low-cost option is the Oasis Inn, (760) 767-5409 (no group discount here; sorry).

I haven't personally stayed at any the following places, but other possible options include:
Boynton's Hacienda Del Sol, (760) 767-5442.
Borrego Valley Inn, (760) 767-0311
Borrego Springs Motel, (760) 767-4339

More upscale (costly) choices include:
Palm Canyon Hotel, (760) 767-5341
Borrego Springs Resort, (760) 767-5700
The Palms at Indian Head, (760) 767-7788

Once you've reserved your room, RSVP to Tanny so we have an idea how many people to expect Saturday. Tanny will have printed route sheets available then. If you'd like to familiarize yourself with the route before Saturday, here are some Google Maps:

The route for Sunday, November 20

On Sunday morning, we'll have a couple of hours to explore the remarkable metal sculptures scattered around the desert north and south of town. If you've never seen them, or still haven't found them all, here's a Google Map pinpointing the locations of all the installations:

Sounds fun, unfortunately I'm not available. But more notice next year and I'll try and have it on the calendar.

RUN'S BEEN CANCELLED. Sorry, but it was too short notice for most people. Tanny still wanted to go even if it was just he and I, but I ran into mechanical issues with my car that I was unable to address before the weekend, so we ended up cancelling our reservations at the overnight stop in Borrego while we could still avoid getting charged for the rooms.

We'll save this route for next year around this time, and get things organized early enough to be more convenient for folks.
