2017 SoCal TT

Post by tannyo »

I had a lovely time. It was nice meeting people like Ben and Beverly, Sean, Ben, Tom, Neil, the 2 Paul’s and their wife’s and everyone else’s name that I can’t remember, sorry. Wonderful roads the first day. At the end of the first day Neil told me that my brake lights were not working. I checked out the two fuses and wiring and determined that I had yet again a bad brake pressure switch. I need to start caring a spare one as these things don’t seem to last very long.

I had a very good Reuben sandwich at the Capri Italian Restaurant with about nine other people from the run. It was about .3 of a mile from the hotel and I was happy to be able to walk up there.

I didn’t want to be the guy who caused an accident because of a lack of brake lights so I left early Sunday morning and drove home. There was no one behind me all the way to the freeway and my next stop was getting off the freeway 148 miles later and still no one behind me.

I’m looking forward to next year’s run.

Just fyi, you can pick up a brake light switch at any auto parts store. No need to call Moss. It takes one wrench and about 2 minutes to replace!

Tanny, I've installed a relay for the brake light switch in the E-type after the previous one lasted less than a year. I cut open the old one and the contacts were already burned. The relay should dramatically slow the contact issue by not sending the B/L current through it. The relay uses a tiny fraction of current by comparison.

I noticed the other day the MGB one is a problem again now after less than a year. I got a new one and a relay I'll be installing shortly.

The problem is all of the switches I've tried are not as robust as the originals were and corrode/burn in a short time.

Steve,

Are you saying I can get the switch at a regular auto parts store? Like an AutoZone or O’Reillys?

Join the SoCal TT group and you will be notified the date of the next run. It’s usually in October.

The route changes every couple of years. Last year we went up Kennedy Meadows Road near Ridgecrest. If it fits here is this year run. If you decide to do this run on your own, I would suggest finding a better hotel.

The directions are more like a suggestion. Sometimes the turn comes before the mileage and sometimes it comes 5 miles after the miles. There are also a couple of confusing parts where you may get lost.

It would be best to find out the locations of the endpoints for each part of the day.

Yes you can! I got my latest one at AutoZone. It's a fairly standard part, 1/4" 1/8" NPT with spade terminals. They have it in the computer for MGB. Part number RB401.

Tanny, Steve is right, the brake light switch for the MGB is widely used in many different cars and is usually in stock at any auto parts store. The thread is actually 1/8" NPT (National Pipe Thread), not 1/4".

Carry PTFE (Teflon) pipe tape with you as it is required to help seal the pipe threads.

Oops, you're right. I always make that same mistake on the thread size. But I've never used tape on the threads though. The brass fitting seems to form itself to the steel threads adequately. I've never noticed a leak in that spot.

This fun run is twice each year, Motocycles in the Spring and whatever else in the Fall ~ we've had Honda Trail 90's, war surplus Motos, Harleys, along with HUGE Dodge 4X4's from the early 1970s and lots and lots of home built and kit cars .

DO consider joining us ! .

The Hotels/Motels tend to be older and weird but always clean, this last one had directly few hot desert spring fed smaller pools around the usual big one ~ I found it very relaxing to slip into the hot water after a hard dusty day in the Desert .

The Drivers and their friends/families always gather 'round the pool to discuss the day, don't miss the host hotel, it's included in your entry fee anyway .

I hope to be able to drive instead of ride shotgun this coming Spring .
