Hi Steve,
Thanks for the welcome back in the Classifieds forum. Will Monday's ride be the easy or challenging route? May try it if it's the easy one, and the killer weather goes away!

And here I thought there were 24 hours in a day.Steve Simmons wrote:Yeah, sorry, I'm working 12 hour days every day, and I'm 3000 miles from home. The route sheet will be posted soon, hopefully tonight.
Can you really spend 12 of those just picking your nose, Steve?
Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I knew the route in advance, it would be possible to divert any law enforcement to other areas.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
Sharon, this route does have some challenging roads. The first climb of the day is Latigo which is quite twisty (and fun) but after that we're simply cruising out Mulholland Highway and up Stunt Road. After that it gets twisty again so my suggestion if you want an easy day would be to stick it out up Latigo, enjoy the rest stop at the overlook and continue at least to the top of Stunt Road.
Actually Jimmy, I usually do the runs in advance but can't this time. If anyone wants to report on the road conditions around the top of Stunt, it would help!

I might be able to check out Latigo, and parts of Mulholland, but not anything around Stunt. Sorry.Steve Simmons wrote: Actually Jimmy, I usually do the runs in advance but can't this time. If anyone wants to report on the road conditions around the top of Stunt, it would help!

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
I made a pre run this morning. There are a couple of large bumps on Latigo and one large dip on Tuna. The top of Stunt is now fully paved and very nice.Steve Simmons wrote:Actually Jimmy, I usually do the runs in advance but can't this time. On the whole this run is much easier to follow than the July 4 run. Nobody should get lost. See you Monday.

Thanks for the heads up, Tanny, although I bet those "large bumps" are far less noticeable without a big old weighty roof on the car.

I think the better aerodynamics of the GT just let me go faster so that the bumps appear larger than in your less aerodynamic tourer.Jimmy wrote:Thanks for the heads up, Tanny, although I bet those "large bumps" are far less noticeable without a big old weighty roof on the car.tannyo wrote:I made a pre run this morning. I love that Tanny is defending the roofed brigade so I can take a break. I was thinking of bringing a roadster on Monday but I may bring a tin tip just to annoy Jimmy.

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
By all means do, Steve.
After watching the Chop Shop for ideas and being in possession of a cordless reciprocating saw, which is easy enough to bring on the run, it'd be an easy and quick job to help you get rid of that excess material which blocks the views from the interior.
I can understand why Tanny's not eager to lose his roof, however, as it would mean a huge reduction in the total available area that could be waxed on a twice-a-week basis.
PS. On August 21 2009 you wrote (in a different forum) that you technically don't have any roadsters.
So, will you bring a Potential Pick Up, or a Tourer??

Oh, Tanny, I didn't realize that you were a closet Bonneville guy, but since you keep getting speeding tickets it does make sense, I suppose.tannyo wrote:[Wax, yet another thing that helps with aerodynamics.
Either way, with a GT weighing over 100 pounds more than a Tourer, you'll need the V8 version of a GT to regain at least part of the power to weight ratio to enjoy for all around use.
Lower weight is usually a great plus when it comes to a vehicle's performance capabilities, with one glaring exception - land speed records.
Since acceleration isn't all that important, and cornering isn't an issue at all, land speed racers can actually benefit from weight (for traction on the salt) and aerodynamics are obviously extremely important to them.
So, since you're a nice guy, I'll donate the rubber bumpers off the Beater B so that you can install another 300-some lbs. of (normally) needless weight onto your Potential Pick Up...err, GT.
After all, why not have a step bumper in the front, too?

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
That's one of the reasons I've personally lost 35 pounds. Between that, the spare tire and jack should make up the 100 pounds. The GT also has larger rear brakes and better weight distribution which gives better handling.Jimmy wrote:Lower weight is usually a great plus when it comes to a vehicle's performance capabilities, with one glaring exception - land speed records.

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
So you got rid of TWO spare tires. That's good. Very good.
And I can certainly understand why a GT needs larger rear brakes, since a mass in motion tends to stay in motion. Particularly so with an overly slippery surface involved.
But I fail to grasp why having all that extra weight of a roof would help handling. Unless, of course, you cut it off, turned it over and used the old roof as a bedliner in a GT made into a pickup.
That, my friend, would result in a lower center of gravity, which definitely helps handling. But not necessarily overall performance.
And for efficiency on the salt flats you'd still have to cut those extra five (?) inches from the height of the windshield.

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
Don't forget that a coupe is always a stiffer body than a convertible. That's how handling can be improved, and in the case of the MGB, the Gt version has better balance front to rear and better rear braking. Still love my tourer of course...

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
Depends on what coupe, Steve.
In Tanny's case, the large roof does indeed help stabilize the body and thereby improve handling.
However, is that enough to offset the squigglyness induced by him driving around with the rear crossmember cut out from under the car?
I suppose I stand corrected, again, since on Tanny's car there has to be SOME sheetmetal left to keep it together.
Doesn't mean you that your roofs are essential, though, does it? Especially now that you no longer has the WaxMaster 9000 available to keep that upper 1/4 acre shiny.

Re: 2009 Labor Day Run
Be careful what you ask for, Spitfire!
Tanny may want you as a passenger merely to have your seatbelts hooked together so that it'll help hold the bottom of his car together laterally.
And, heaven forbid, should you end up going turtle (not entirely unlikely with all that heavy metal up on top) you might end up sliding upside down for quite a distance before wearing through the numerous layers of wax.
If his GT for some reason does not stop sliding before reaching actual metal, we may have a really serious problem, however, as sparks emitting from the needless top are likely to start a fire.
Fires are seriously frowned upon around where I live, so right there you're at a disadvantage - as if it wasn't bad enough that your Nikon won't do much good when trying to get good shots from within a "cage" with limited openings to the outside world.
At least if you rode with Malcolm or me, you'd have a larger vista (but may need to use faster film).
Ah, what the heck, I'll bring an extra extinguisher just in case, since a few hundred feet of tomorrow's run will cross my property and I have a vested interest in it not burning.

Wow ~ I go off for the day and you alls jump on the GT guy ! .
Closed car envy rears it's ugly head again .
It almost apears you don't know that " Tourer " means closed car (' FHC ') in LBC speak.....
I'd add some smileys if I could find the buttons....
See you to-morrow , in a TRUE " Touring Coupe " =8-) (not the Met tho')
