Painting engine bay (and now maybe wheel wells)
I was thinking of have one One Day or similar spray the MGA engine bay, and now that you have shot down my ill conceived attempt at being lazy via undercoating, the wheel wells as well.
The frame has POR15 on it, so that is all set, but think they'd be an OK choice for the engine bay and wheel wells?

Well, you get what you pay for. If you want to see what a 1-day job looks like, swing by. One of my cars has such a job and there are only three types of blemishes - sanding marks, runs and primer showing through. If none of these things bother you then go for it!
Wheel wells I wouldn't worry about too much. (Say that three times fast) The engine bay however is something I'd like done right on my own car. I need to do this to my '65 B sometime soon, and it will be going to a real shop for that. I'm stripping it down myself, then letting them do final prep, primer and spray. If you don't care about a perfect job then I'd say strip and sand it yourself, then go to the 1-day place. They are usually most lacking in prep so you can save money while getting a better job by doing that part at home. I don't know how it might affect the warranty on the job though.

Damn it Steve - let me half-*** at least something, OK? LOL.
I do agree the engine bay needs to be a high standard. Sigh...
Maybe I'll just spray the wheel wells then. Probably a fairly forgiving place to start using the gun.

Except that it'd probably be quicker and easier to use a brush.tdskip wrote:Maybe I'll just spray the wheel wells then. Probably a fairly forgiving place to start using the gun.
And if you're really worried about how the wheel wells look, lower the car until you can't see'em.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

Sorry Tom, it's a disease. It's why a lot of my projects take so long. I'll half-arse something on the road and not think twice, but if I take something apart at home then I prefer it goes together at least as well as when it was new.

If you're going to do all the prep yourself, then why not spray the paint yourself? The prep is the most important part of any paint job. It's not too difficult to spray paint. Make sure you carefully mask off any areas that don't need painting, and make sure you get the viscosity of the paint right. That is the paint and thinner combination. Practice on some old sheet metal before even trying the wheel wells. Bob's your uncle.

I suspect that by "...practice on some old sheetmetal..." Malcolm would like to have you paint his Jag.
Not an all bad idea, as you'd be hard pressed to make it look much worse.

I wouldn't even dream of suggesting having your Jag painted if I thought it'd actually happen.
You know darn well that I think it looks perfect as is.
Well, except for having a roof.

Hang on a minute, you were on the TT? Who are you? What were you driving? I didn't think anyone from this forum was on the TT, except for Nate. Those of us who like to drive, like to drive.

Ah, so I guess you were driving the TR8. Well it's good to see you on this forum. Are you going on the new years day drive? Those day drives in the canyons are really great.

Yeh, that was me Malcolm! She'd still be in that parking lot without your help. LOL.
I have family in town for the Holidays, which makes my desire to join you very-very high, but it probably won't happen.
Tom (aka TR8 guy)
