Tire Shops for Wire Wheels and Tubed Tires

Post by Steve Simmons »

I thought it might be nice to have a list of tire / repair shops that can deal with mounting and balancing wire wheels, and who will install inner tubes. Most big chains will not touch an inner tube even if they sell them, and lack the proper mounting and balancing equipment.

Chatsworth Tire / Tire Pros
21803 Devonshire St
Chatsworth, CA 91311
Phone: (818) 341-8631
Notes: I buy all my tires here. They can handle wire wheels and tubes.

Darrin's MG Service
9318 Oso Ave #G
Chatsworth, CA 91311
Phone: (818) 882-4414
Open: 9am to 5pm Monday thru Friday
Notes: He has the equipment in-shop, and handles wire wheels and tubes.

As a side note, a common source for inner tubes is Pep Boys.

For those down in Orange County, I have had favorable experience with
Grand Prix in Costa Mesa. They did a nice price match (actually beat my online price on Michelins), handled my wire wheels, liners, and tubes perfectly, and were competent with an alignment.

Wire wheel friendly

Rons Tire and wheel in N Hollywood 818 764 1560. One of the sales managers (Chuck Peters) is a certified British car fanatic. He owns a couple of Mini Coopers and is currently restoring an MGB.

I have had very good results at Valley Wire Wheel Service in Van Nuys. He does a lot of wheels that end up on the lawn at Pebble Beach, has the machinery to make his own spokes, and is reasonably priced. I like to just drop in and see what he's got in the shop, I had always wondered what a Duesenberg wheel looked like! Last visit there was a Siata V-8 there with it's owner. He turned out to be the director of the Peterson Museum, thats a pretty good reference.

I am out of town now, but he's in the phone book.

OOOPS!! I see that the question was about tire changers and not wheel builders, Mike's business is more oriented to the lacing and trueing part and while he does mount and balance it's not his main line of work.
