1967 MGB GT- another family restoration

Post by gorms68 »

We are in the process of acquiring another MGB. This time a 1967 MGB GT that we found (this morning) in La Mesa, CA. We have been looking for a Mk1 GT for a short time now, with the intention that our son, now 11, could take an active participation in it's restoration. With another six years before he get's his driver's license the time is right to start what is normally for us a long drawn out project.

We got some help on this one though. One of the previous owners started a restoration on this one. Most notably a nice restoration of the dash and installation of an all new cloth wiring harness. The body is all complete and will only need a little work to get it ready for paint. The pictures show the current status of the car as it sits in the current owner's driveway. We hope to take possession next week when we can trailer it home. Already made one trip home with a truck load of parts including an extra alloy bonnet. What we have found is a collection of two cars. You see about 20 years ago a previous owner answered an ad for two GT's selling for $350. One being a poor parts car and the other the resurrected GT we plan to restore.

Here are a few pictures of our starting point:

Wow, you're really miles ahead on this one. In addition to the interior, did he also paint the engine bay? That will make it so much easier to restore, since you don't have to paint before doing mechanical projects!

About the only thing I see wrong with the car is that the steering wheel is on the wrong side. ;)

Both the interior and engine bay were painted with an oil enamel. He did not use a stock MG color, so unless we try to match the exterior color to his paint the color will be a little off. I am told this is an original Tartan Red car, so if that is the case that is what we will probably do the exterior in.

Tonight we went through some of the parts that came with the car. We put the parts in organized crates. We found some new parts and some old parts. My favorite parts were the badges that Say, MGB MG GT. There are many more boxes to go through.
We also ordered a Heritage Certificate to find out what the original color and interior were. We think it was red with black interior with red pipping. My dad reserved a trailer for saturday to go pick up he car.
I am so exited abut getting the car.

Today we brought the GT home. Once it was unloaded I go to work. I took the parts out and the seats and vacuumed everything. Then put the back seat back in. My dad and I checked to see if the engine had compression. It did!!
I am so exited to go work on it!!!

Here are some pictures. Now that you have seen the pictures what do you think I should start on?

Wahooo!!! Those are GREAT pictures! So Chandler, did you sit in the car the whole way home? :jester

I got nervous when I saw how close the car was to that drop-off next to the driveway. Also remember to be very careful not to dent that aluminum hood while you're pushing the car.

Have you guys decided if you're doing a full restoration, or leaving the parts alone that the other guy already fixed up? If it were me, I would start working toward starting that engine. Once it's running, you will have a better idea if it needs to be rebuilt.

I'm so excited for you!

Very exciting! But what's with 11-year old Chandler behind the wheel and drinking in the photos? :P

How come you're not concerned about the dogs not having seat belts :hammer:

Today we removed the front and back wheels and inspected the suspension. It looks good except for some rubber pieces that were cracking. The suspension and brakes have been rebuilt. We took off the brake drums so we can repaint them. I got to use the impact wrench to take the drums off. They are currently silver. We are going to powder coat them.

Today we bled the brakes and flushed them out. Bleeding the brakes were not getting them clean so took of the master cylinder and took it apart and cleaned it. it is now soaking in a tub of cleaner.
