Pete also did the door jams on the body. He has to paint the underside of the hood, jams on the door, put it all together, then take it to the paint booth, paint the outside of the car, wet sand, buff, put the trim pieces on, the windows back in then take it back to Malcolm's.

Didn't you say you were painting it blue? More importantly that you weren't painting it gray? Am I going to have to let you know which days you're allowed to drive so we don't have two nearly identical right hand drive 1967 MGB GTs on the road at one time?

I changed my mind. It's silver with a fine metallic. Your 67 is a lot darker so there will be no problem recognizing whose car is whose. :)

Malcolm painted the engine. It's had a freshening of the rings and the valves checked. The trans was already painted by the previous owner. And for those that know me, I know this is going to seem strange, but I'm not going to fix it. Nobody will see it when it's in the car.

A bit of brake spray cleaner on a rag will take the paint off the bell housing. It won't be that obvious but it will be visible so if you're picky then you may want to clean up that one area a bit, at least on the top and sides. If you want original however, then leave the paint there. The factory painted the engines with the gearbox in place so there was always overspray.

So I can be lazy and call it original?

It's been painted, sanded and buffed. It still needs a little more detailing on the paint and all the trim pieces put back on.

My car went from the painters to Malcolm's today. It still needs detail work, but that will be done after Malcolm gets it back together and running. We put the spare wheel I painted a while ago on the back and I took the other four. Tomorrow I'll take them to Pico Wheel to be media blasted and checked for true. After that, I'll spray them with self etching primer, paint them with Moss silver wire wheel paint, let them dry for around three days then bring back to Pico Wheel to have the Yokohama Avid S tires mounted and wheels balanced. Should be able to drive it in two or three weeks.

New pics from Malcolm's. Just a little further to go. Malcolm is waiting on a new master clutch cylinder and a few other parts. Then Malcolm will dial it in, make sure everything is working correctly, then it's mine. Can't hardly wait.

Took the car to get the front end aligned (toe in). After that I had a slight vibration in the front which was solved by a couple of whacks to the front knockoffs. Apparently freshly painted wheels need to be re-tightened after a few miles because the paint compresses.

I noticed that the rear bumper is a little bent on the left. One more thing to take care of.

I hope you didn't paint the mating surface on the back of the wheel center. If so, clean it well with a cloth and some stripper. There shouldn't even be any grease there. No paint on the splines either, just a very light coating of grease.

Just FYI for those who aren't aware, it's standard practice to check spinner torque after a bit of mileage just to be sure they are staying tight. Normally they will be just as tight if not tighter. If loose at all, tighten then and check again after another period of driving. This time they should definitely be tight. If they have loosened a second time then something may be wrong with the setup.

Yesterday Malcolm worked through some teething issues. Minor things like adjusting the rigjt headlamp, fixing the choke so it doesn't require two hands to pull it out, adjusting the valves, replace the rear taillight bulb, wavy speedometer, loose fan belt and checked the front suspension to see if it is the cause of a vibration in the steering wheel over 65 MPH. Everything looks okay. I think the problem may be an improperly balanced wheel. The wire wheels were static balanced, I can't find anyone who can balance the wheels on a machine who has the proper equipment to balance a wire wheel. My next step is to have the wheels balanced on the car. Kelvin has written that this is his preferred choice for balancing wire wheels.

I guess that means I'll have to have the wheels balanced every time I have the tires rotated.

I agree that on the car is best, but I still don't do it because of what you mentioned. Also you have to mark the wheels so that when you put them back on, the splines are in exactly the same position. I'm too lazy to deal with all that. I have all the parts set aside to make a balancing adapter, which you are welcome to borrow whenever I get around to finishing the project. It won't be right away though.

So did the vibration move/change when you put the front tires on the rear?
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

Jimmy wrote:So did the vibration move/change when you put the front tires on the rear?
Since all of the wheels were static balanced, no I did not. The vibration happens at 65 MPH and Malcolm rebuilt the front end and checked it to see if anything was loose yesterday. The vibration did not appear until the front end was aligned.

I really don't know how balanced the wheels are. If I knew they where all balanced correctly, then I could look elsewhere. Pico wheel told me the wheels I'm using are round and true. The wheel I'm using for a spare is slightly egg shaped and only appropriate for emergencies.
