Engine is ready to come out and I confirmed the plug on the top of the OD is in place so now it's a real mystery where that plunger came from.

so what is it with the dtype overdrive that makes in such a pita to pull? Round 1 car

Well, it's easier when you lie to your friends and tell them you're having a party, and when they get there tell them it's an engine pulling party.

Shouldn't be harder than an LH although I believe the radiator panel is farther forward on later cars. The tunnel on the Mark I is also narrower, but so is the gearbox. If you have a header, I'd pull it off before taking the lump out.

every thing is off but it feels like it's hung up on something and I cant get the engine to move forward

So much fun. Turns out the drive shaft had a death grip on the trans that took a bfh to free up. Once that was fixed it was out in 5 minutes.

So far all the parts on the overdrive are accounted for and that plunger found is an extra part that shouldn't of been there plus the other piece. Any tips on separating the overdrive from the trans on the d type?

how much force did it take? I've got the remote removed and all 8 nuts off and it's only moving a 1/32 of an inch at the top and not budging at all at the bottom.

It's been years, but maybe you have to remove something to get it out of the way? The pump assembly maybe? Can't remember!

Transmission has officially kicked my butt. Talked to quantum and he said as it sits it should slide right off. So far it hasn't budged even after using the engine hoist to lift it off the ground and swinging on it. Last thing I can think of is to bolt some 2x4s to the housing an slipping them under the legs of the hoist and use it as a giant puller but at this point I'm pretty sure something will break.

Considering the housing is rare and made of aluminum, and something inside is obviously hanging it up, I think I'd send the whole lump back and let them break it for you.

I might have a spare 4-speed box you can use in the meantime.

I'm at that point to. Wish I hadn't tossed the supercharger box as it's perfect for shipping transmissions. I really wonder what is hanging it up.

Last thought, I have another D-type gearbox here we can pull apart if you want to look for something that could be causing this.

Thanks for your help Steve. Pulled the tail casing off and in the process the whole thing finally came off. All the gears and splines look ok but I did find a sliver of metal on one of the splines. It's going to be interesting to see whats happened with it. The inside of this box looks as clean as the one you opened up last night.

Well one mystery has been solved. Turns out the black piece found in the transmission is something to do with the mechanics ear piercing. Other piece who knows how it got in there.

Looks like the overdrive come back on Thursday so I might get to put the engine back in on Sat. In the mean time I finally got around to changing the rear hubs and I'm glad I did. Turns out the rear axle nuts were less than finger tight and the right side seal was starting to leak.

Anyone want a free lunch next saturday?

I was going to try to come up and help but I have problems with my own 1967 MGB GT and they aren't trivial. Well, the fix is actually fairly easy but I may have to pull the engine to get to it. If only the engine bay were a couple inches wider. :roll:

What happened steve? I still haven't gotten to the point of putting the engine back in as every other job I had to do this week on the car was like opening a can of worms. Even a simple job like putting the od unit back on took hours. Splines must be absolutely perfectly aligned or it wont go. But now its got 4 new hubs and new front bearings. A parking brake cable that's not frozen, new seals on the axle and the seats are finally on the correct side. Finally got the car off of jack stands last night and should have the engine ready to be installed by next weekend.

the oberg tilt a lift is the only way to go. Easiest engine install ever.

Finally it's back on the road and the overdrive works again. Took a bit longer than planned but it's done. Along with all new hubs on the car I had to change 2 hubs on the wheels as it turns out you absolutely should install new hubs with new wheels even if the old hubs look good. Also had to change out the fuel pump and fuel line as when powered up fuel sprayed out of pretty much everywhere. Also installed a heat shield for the supercharger which turned out to be a total pita but hopefully it will keep the carb a bit cooler. Now to finish buttoning up and give it a bath.
