I should have never driven your MGB. All I can think about it how fun more power would be in my MGA.

That's a sweet looking engine...

Engine bay unfortunately had to be completely stripped as the old paint was coming off in sheets. 2 paint test panels have been rejected as well.

Geoff you need to get that 1800 going

Wow, that's unfortunate. The old paint looked so good, too. But you're changing the color anyway aren't you?

This is probably costing a lot, but I guarantee you're saving money in the long run by having these guys do the work. At least it will be done properly.

I just love the way Stewart's project slowly expanded.

Makes me feel warm inside when I think about how all my small projects creep into unmanageable undertakings.

Keep up the good work!

Getting closer to the color. Left one was rejected before I even saw it.

I thought you were going away from red. Is there a particular red you're shooting for? There were several shades used by the factory.

Steve I'm going to return the car to it's original tartan red or a very close variation of tartan red.

Engine bay is back in primer and the slam panel was welded into place. Previously it was held in by screws.

A bit of progress. Engine bay has been sanded and roughly half the car has had it's second block sanding.

I feel like it needs fender flares and white circles. But then I'm biased. :)

Interesting that the painter masked off the engine compartment and painted the outside first. Usually I have seen painters do the opposite or do it all at once. Any insight into their thought process or do you have more mods identified for under the hood?

I thought that was a bit odd as well but that's how he does it. He's still has to paint the trunk area, battery hatch area, engine bay, outside of the hatch and bonnet.

That's is an odd sequence. I too have only seen them "jamb" the car first (door jambs, engine bay, etc.). As long as the finished product comes out good, that's all that matters. It would be interesting to know why he does it that way?

The color looks fantastic, Stewart. Is it an off-the-shelf code, or did you have it matched to something?

Single stage, or bc/cc?

base coat clear coat. The color is about a step back from as dark as you can get tartan red while still using the formula for tartan red. I had one test panel shot at the limit and it looked fantastic when the light was perfect and somewhat muddy when the light wasn't.

Hmmm, not really sure that makes sense. The name 'Tartan Red' is a totally arbitrary moniker that each paint supplier assigns to one of their formulations. The actual color that sprays out could vary from one supplier to another, but they can all call it 'Tartan Red'.

If you've deviated in darkness from whatever their formulation spits out, then it's no longer PPG's (for instance) Tartan Red....it become something different. My guess is that they either gave you a selection of codes to choose from that were in the same family as the Tartan Red, or they adjusted the ratio of the pigments (added more black, for example) if you said you wanted it darker. Either way, you've deviated away from the Tartan Red formulation.

I just bought some red paint for my '65 Cortina GT. the paint store actually had a sample of the original color code, but the formulation was for lacquer. Rather than 'converting' that formulation over to urethane, and inevitably changing the color, I found a urethane that was exactly the same color....an Alfa Romeo color.

Hey, I see a new, yet familiar face! Welcome to the forum Benny!

When we painted my MGC (at the same shop), we took the manufacturer's standard Tartan Red formula and sprayed several test panels as we tweaked it. The final color was about a shade darker, and very similar to a Ferrari Red. Maybe a bit richer. It was also similar to the color the car was before, when it was painted in England as a correct BMC Tartan Red. Maybe a fraction of a shade darker and richer.

Even the BMC shades probably varied slightly from batch to batch, as the Brits were more concerned with using surplus materials and keeping the line moving than they were about matching this year's Tartan Red to the previous one.
