new LONG TERM project

Post by gorms68 »

Its not home yet, but we confirmed our caretaker-ship of this old car yesterday. Any guesses what it is? Robb and Steve can't play ;)

Looks like we will be the third owners of this one. Still collecting parts to make it more complete, think we found the hood and radiator shell for it and have those home already.

So after a little more research and more time looking around the car the we have confirmed what it is and when it was made. The car in the shop is a Chandler with a 1914 sedan body on a 1920 chassis. The body is a one year only body and was the first year for a Chandler sedan. The frame in 1920 was a few inches longer and updated slightly updated over 1914, so in theory and I guess in reality it did work. We are anxious to dig into the car some more and learn more of its history.

Update on our progress:
The car is now out of long term storage and waiting to come to its new home. Today was a busy work day so Friday has been set for the pick up. Steve was kind enough to tease me with this photo:

Unfortunately not much to update so far. My biggest challenge is learning about what I have. I think I have confirmed without a reasonable doubt that the body was indeed built by Willoughby as part of a larger run of sedans marketed to the 'mid-market' automobile manufactures that were not yet up to speed on building the more complex closed cars. Closed cars really started to become more popular in the market by 1909. In 1914 most car manufactures still did not produce a closed car of their own design. Ironic today where most cars are SUV's, coupes, or sedans. But back then it was not too smart to be surrounded by plate glass and a squeaky wood body.

I recently found out that Harley Earl the great car designer/stylist created a custom Chandler sedan in 1918. You can image my excitement when I read about this thinking that just maybe we had that very car. After all our car has lived its whole time here in the Los Angeles area and that is where the Earl Automotive Works was. reading further into the article I learned that the sedan was blue and the average man could see over the top of it. With our car nearly seven and a half feet tall that killed that idea. His car was built for the 1919 Los Angeles Automobile Show so now I am on the hunt for a picture of it. I have been in touch with Rick Earl, Harley's grandson, and he has promised to look for a picture if one exists in the archive.

For now any free time we get goes into Chandler's 1914 Model T speedster project. The engine is almost done. the rear axle is almost complete. the wheels are almost ready for paint. So many things in progress at the same time. I'll post some pictures soon.
