Here's my new project car. It needs some work on the doglegs, paint, ...

My intention is to replace the engine with my newly rebuilt engine, use the three syncro overdrive transmission that is in the car, paint it midnight blue and if I have any money left over do the interior in blue with light blue piping. I know the midnight blue cars came with a black interior, but I just like the blue interior. Though I like red too. It would look good with black, I'm not sure how red would look with midnight blue. The reason for the change of color is because I'm not thrilled with white. While I loved my old 1971 BRG GT, there are just too many of them and for good reason, they look great in BRG. I just want something different.

I've already driven a car with the steering on the right and didn't have a problem with it. The car looks like a lot of work and unfortunately there's a lot that I can't do myself because of my back and right shoulder and hand injury.

The steering wheel has cracks in it, does anyone know of a good used one or someone who can repair it for less than a new one from Moss? I've also seen the Eastwood kit, but noticed Benny said that the problem is metal tabs that come loose in the steering wheel.

More pictures if you want to look.

Congrats on the new wheels. Righthand drive...very cool! I'm sure the blue will look great. It's good to make it your own.

Congratulations! A right ringer, perfect. I love British cars with the right steering position.

The blue interior with a light blue pipping does look really nice, make it how you want it to be. The midnight with a red interior would look good or a black interior with red pipping could look nice too.

Since it already has a black interior that would be less expensive. I wouldn't have to have the door panels or rear seat back done since they are in good shape.

I was wondering if someone was going to rescue that poor car. Sounds like a decent deal. Be sure to open up that gearbox and check it THOROUGHLY, as the early 3-sync / D-Type units are not nearly as durable as the later 4-sync / LH-Type ones.

On a more personal note, are you sure you want right hand drive? I seem to recall that your bad arm is the right one. As a veteran of driving RHD daily I can tell you that your right arm will do significantly more work than the left. It will be the one holding the car on the road as you shift through the gears on a canyon road, set up for and exit from turns, etc.

The problem with the steering wheels when they get really old and abused is that the spokes break away from the rim. You can usually tell if this has happened by how flexible the wheel is. It can be fixed but it requires breaking away all the bakelite. Big job. Ben Cordsen in Colorado can do this for you. I don't know what he charges but I doubt it will be less than a new one. Eastwood's repair kits seem to work well based on what I've seen. Or, just buy a leather kit and wrap it for now.

Good luck, you have a mighty big job ahead of you to make this car as nice as your old one!

Just for Doug, here's the image of the interior flipped so it looks like the steering wheel is on the right.

I checked out midnight blue today and discovered that it has a purple look which is not what I want. The blue interior won't go with purple tints. Looks like royal blue is going to be the color for my car.

I stopped off at Malcolm's today to put more leather and vinyl treatment on the seats and dash and try removing rust from some of the chrome. I was successful cleaning one of the door vent window frames, but I really need to wait until the frame has been removed from the door to complete the job. I wanted to see if it would work and I'm satisfied with the result though it looks like the vent window handles will have to be replaced. The horn button trim ring was too far gone, there wasn't just rust but the chrome had actually come off. The overdrive switch came out better than I thought it would. I'll get pictures later.

In the mean time Malcolm has removed the outside trim, bumpers, lights and started on the engine compartment. Here's how it was before.

There was a lot of extra stuff in there. Strange horns, weird electric fan and a custom power brake booster. By morning today a lot of that was gone.

The engine will be pulled to be replaced by the recently rebuilt engine from my 1971 and the engine compartment will be prepared to be painted with the body. Malcolm said that he worked on it more this afternoon. The painter isn't ready for the car yet so Malcolm is working on the car when he isn't busy with other projects. In this case he was waiting for parts.

No. I didn't think that for me the effort was too great without power assist and the brake booster takes up a lot of room. If I thought I needed a brake booster, I'd go with the unit off the late model MGBs. It fits in the space and is dual instead of single circuit. Are you interested in the booster for your Met?

I was at Malcolm's today to order parts. I got lucky again in that the rear brakes and springs had been replaced so they don't have to be gone through. However the front suspension needs the bushings replaced (thankfully not the kingpin bushings at $104.95 just for parts), the brake hoses and new disks and pads. While we were at it we ordered replacements for the rubber seals for the windshield, rear, quarter, side, vent windows, bonnet rubber and rear hatch inner and outer rubber seals and ordered side mirrors and four cans of paint for the wire wheels. At $18.95 a can that's pretty expensive, but it is the right color.

I may have good fortune for the $598.00 of back registration fees in that we may be able to define this as a collector car. If that can be done, then they won't charge me for the back fees. Here's hoping.

As promised here's pictures of the vent window frames.

Not really that bad for a 44 year old car left out in the elements. With my new not so secret weapon of aluminum foil and water I went after the right frame and I think it came out nice.
CIMG0029.jpg
Once the frame is out of the car when the car is sent for body work and paint, I'll be able to finish the job.

It seems odd to me that there is more rust on the inside of the car, than the outside of the car. Maybe because the outside gets washed and waxed every so often and the inside never sees a protective coat of wax. To see if the switches can be saved I went after the bottom half of the overdrive switch.

I think it looks nice and it will save me the cost of replacing the switches. I'm hoping I'll have enough money after Malcolm makes the car mechanically sound, transfers over the engine from my 1971, converts it to negative ground, takes it apart for the painter and puts it all back together again after Pete has completed the body work and paint to have the interior completely redone. Right now my interior fund is set aside in case my fudge factor money runs out. If all goes well I might even have a little money left over. The cost of parts so far is less than I had budgeted, so here's more hoping.

And you're converting to positive ground why???
You'll have to set your GPS to start at the finish, or it'll show your routes in reverse.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

In five years, when they are all back on the road, we should get them altogether for a 67 BGT ONLY run. :drive

Why convert to negative ground? You will have to get the tachometer rebuilt. Nothing wrong with positive ground unless you want to run a bunch of modern accessories without adapters.

I want to add a hidden modern radio and my phone doesn't work very long without access to a charger. I know that you are satisfied with just the exhaust note, but I need a little more. GPS, radio with Bluetooth and phone chargers for my wife and I.

It really isn't that hard to wire the cigarette lighter(s) and a stereo "backwards".
