2013 New Years Day Fun Run

Post by Steve Simmons »

OK, I can take a gentle prodding. Here we go...

What: 2013 New Year's Fun Run
Where: Meet at The Commons, 4799 Commons Way, Calabasas, CA 91302
When: Tuesday, January 1, 2013 - Meet at 9:30 AM, depart 10:30 AM (NOTE TIME CHANGE)

Once again, a bunch of Vintage Motoring gearheads will gather on January 1st at "The Commons" on Calabasas Road, just off the 101 freeway. We meet on the east side of the lot near Williams Sonoma. Meeting time will start at 9:30 AM with a departure of 10:30 AM sharp!.

As always, this is just a fun run and you're responsible for yourself. There is no organization and no leader. We are just a group of like-minded enthusiasts who enjoy driving together. Traditionally this is a fairly relaxed fun run.

THE ROUTE: Our route will take us along the entire length of Mulholland Highway from East to West, then south on Pacific Coast Highway for a while and up to Charmlee Park. In the event of rain, an alternate ending point may be chosen since the parking lot at the park is dirt.

NOTE: Sometimes there are several car groups in the Commons parking lot so we should try to park in our own area. That way it will be easier to round everyone up when we leave, and no one will get left behind. If you do get left behind in the chaos, just head for the Rock Store. Please also note that there is a $4 donation (honor system) for parking at Charmlee.

See you all in 2013!

It's an MG so even with the top up you're going to get just as wet so even if it's raining you have no excuse not to go.

Not only does it not keep the rain out but the plastic windows are so fogged and brown I can't see in my blind spots

Rain or shine, I'm ready to go. My car has a roof and is actually dry inside. The heater and windshield wipers (though at one speed) work.

This would be a perfect first drive with paint. BUT we will be in Yosemite for a wedding that day. Dang, and I even knew about this too.

Weather looks good for tuesday.

So do I bring the MGA, which I love to drive, has been running well, and has a top that goes down (my preference), but has a nasty habit of ending in a tow home? Or do I bring the BMW, which is a great car, has more power, and is less likely to end in a tow?

Hi Geoff,
If reliability is the only criterion, then bring your VW. Otherwise drive the MG, and have fun.

Woohoo! No tow trucks today!

When I pulled off the freeway near my house, my car was idling around 2100 RPM, which was weird, but seemed to run fine all the way home at 65-70 otherwise. Something to figure out, but hey, no tow trucks!

Despite the chilly breeze early on, it sure turned into a nice day. Hard to tell exactly how many cars were on the run because we were mixed in with two other groups at the start. But from what I could tell we had...

7 MGB, 5 MGB GT, 1 MGC GT, 1 Warwick, 1 MG Midget, 1 Jaguar E-Type, 1 Triumph Spitfire/GT, 1 Mini, 1 Riley Elf, 1 Corvette (classic), 1 Triumph TR-6, 1 Lotus Elan, 1 BMW 3-Series, 2 MGA, 1 MG TC, 1 Porsche Carerra

That would make 27 cars.

There was also an Alfa Romeo and Porsche Cayman that I'm pretty sure were part of our group...

Oh, that was probably what I thought was a Carerra. It was Mark's car. You're' right about the Alfa. I think it was an early 90's model?

I can't believe that Geoff and Gene deprived a tow company a good start to the new year.

Had a rouge MGB show up while at rib ranch.

Great fun today and a good start to 2013...........

Learnt today :

Tanny needs to overtake that slow MGC at the front.

Jimmy needs to get a hair net or something so he can put the top down on his beater Bee.

Found out that Genes Spitfire is fast, so I need to get a bigger rear view mirror, as he filled mine really quick.

Best not going to bed at 2am and attempting this run without breakfast.

Was impressed at Tyson's driving ability, without getting too close to that red E Type's rear end.

Finally, it meant a lot to be amongst like minded enthusiast's on a very cold start to the new year.
thnx everyone

When we got to PCH I tried to pass Mark's twin cam MGA, but my 1296 cc were not going to do it.
Bigger motor is better.

Glad to report that the oak twig crammed into the oil pressure sender worked very well for sealing a serious oil leak. Made it home with no leaks. I will be carrying oak twigs in my tool kit now.
Great to see all the cars today, I suppose there were people there too.

Hope all your cars work well in the new year :drive

You can see the rest of the pictures at my photo gallery.

My son and I had a fun time. It was nice being with the group, you are a great bunch. Congratulations to Geoff for making a run in his MGA without being towed home. I hope you have many more runs without a tow. When Gene went to a tree and cut off a small branch Geoff and I were wondering what he was up to. Geoff went to see and I just wanted to close my eyes. ;) It was an inventive solution for his oil leak problem and made it a "proper" British car as it now contained wood.

Actually, there was a (70's?? I'm no expert) 911 in an orange-red color that seemed to be part of our group, for the first couple stages of the drive. And Mark's hard to miss Cayman.
