I now have a barricade around the area to hopefully prevent anyone from stealing my hole cover.

So Steve,
Did no one ever tel you that you can cut the plywood to fit so you do not have to have a full sheet above the opening on the right hand side of the one photo.... .....
When will the second floor beams be going in also you seem to have left out the window for the bar at the far end for the view.... ....
Very nice I am jealous for sure now.

Re: There's a hole in my roof!
Since I was worried about an aerial assault by thieves looking to steal my hole cover, I decided to have some boards put up to block them. Martin's observation gave me the idea to simply tilt the boards up to match the plywood on the front, thus saving the effort of cutting it shorter.

Re: There's a hole in my roof!
Much progress has been made. While the slats on the top of the hole cap cover should be sufficient to keep out a basic aerial assault, it wasn't capable of blocking an attack by a midget army out to steal my hole cap. So we lined the top of the cover with plywood. To protect the wood, we have begun wrapping it in weatherproof paper.
We were also concerned about the midget army coming through the openings in the sides of the covers so we have begun plugging them with glass windows, to allow us to still watch for them approaching.
At this point I decided this might be a good place to park a car in case we need to escape during an attack. We placed a convertible below a small loft which we can use as a lookout station. With the top down, we can jump down into the car to make a fast escape.
We still have lots of openings in the walls to plug up.

Hi Steve,
Sure looks good .
I have just one question for you about your MGA.
Do you have to cray a case of oil in the boot of the car due to leaking gaskets or is it that your just trying to insure that it dose not mark it's territory in the new garage before sealing the floor by using a drip tray and a tarp under the MGA?

Yes, that's a tarp, not an oil slick.
Just protecting the concrete because I plan to paint it once it has cured, and paint doesn't stick very well to oil-stained concrete. The TC is now in there as well. Seems like a pretty good place to park cars. I may have to expand on that thought...

Re: There's a hole in my roof!
Update: RAIN!
We started on siding but had to stop for a bit. Bad weather, busy season at work, etc. We plan to get more work done later this week and with a little luck we may be painting the outside, too.
Garage... that's not a bad idea. I could turn this thing into a garage!

Nice Steve, I assume you have moved from the old garage? I might have missed it reading the previous post's but are the depressions in the floor for Lift bases?

Yes, the old garage is now full of kids toys and SUVs. The depressions on the two ends are for the lift bases. The hole in the middle is for a future work lift.

I guess it's been a while. Shortly after the last update, cars started finding their way into the hole cover after they heard it was being made into a garage.

Re: There's a hole in my roof!
Back to the exterior, we decided that one layer of shearwall wasn't enough, so we added some siding and primed it. Yes, we plan to have a nicely painted hole cover / garage.
In the rear, windows started going in.
Then we decided there still wasn't enough wood on the outside so we added more. Solid redwood batten boards on the bottom and cedar shake on top.
Next came the front window, and paint. We also decided that lighting might be a good idea, so lanterns out front and gas station lamps in the rear. And this is where it stands today. Doors are next!

Re: There's a hole in my roof!
I can assure you that was no accident! It isn't easy making such a big garage look like it was always there, but I think we mostly achieved that. I'd do a few things differently if I were starting again, but nothing major. And if I were starting again then I'd probably go insane anyway...TEAM ROSBIF wrote:Nice job Steve and Linda, liked the way you art directed the exterior to match the rest of the house.....looks like it was meant to be !
I already bought them! Just had to make the garage big enough to hold everything inside.Martin Keller wrote:So how many more cars are you going to purchase to fill all the space..... .....
