Her Royal Majesty , the Duchess of Cambria 1960 Austin A55

Post by whitebuffalo »

It is a 1960 Austin A55 MKII Cambrian.

Ok, my dad surprised me today with a new car project for me. He was out of town and I was heading to pick him up at the LAX shuttle so he had the car delivered while I was away.

I saw this about two weeks ago on a trailer at a tow yard. Turns out it has been in a garage since 1982 so is in really good condition for the most part.

Does have a bit of a dent on the driver's side rear wing which has pushed the trim and tail light into the boot lid making it difficult to open and close. A little hammer work and I should have it back in place.

Plans are to upgrade to disc brakes and a little lowering and wider wheels. It is a color I believe to be named Orchid which is a very pale purple color. Not exactly my taste in color so will do it up in Island blue or something like that. The motor is a 1500 with single SU so I want to add more power with a MGB 1800.

I did a little work on the new car. Firstly I have named her Hyacinth from the 1990's BBC comedy 'Keeping up Appearances' where the main character Hyacinth always mentioned her china table wear with periwinkle flowers. Since the color is a light shade of purple I only thought it fitting.

Ok, now down to the nitty gritty. At some time in it's history it had been backed into and the left rear wing had been pushed into the boot lid making it difficult to open or close the lid.

A little hammering and now the boot lid opens and closes properly. Will need to do more hammer and dolly work to give it a proper surface to paint.

I also found the spare tire, it is under the car on a clam shell tray that is lowered down by turning a screw mechanism in the trunk.

I sold it to a guy in New York, he got it running and as far as I know he is still restoring it. Had to delete the pictures because my photobucket was getting filled.
