Re: 2019 Snowball Rally
I drove up from my home in North Hollywood to the Presidio Yacht Club for the bonus night stage of the 2019 Snowball Rally.
Packed and ready to go.
For months my car has been running great. By the time I had arrived I had started to have ignition problems and found out that I had a slow leak in the left front tire (turned out to be a spoke on the Dayton wire wheel). I was having to double clutch into second otherwise the gear would grind and in third gear turning on overdrive was slushy. I think I was low on transmission oil. When I got home it took almost 2 pints. The timing had moved and was too far advanced. I did my best to adjust the timing, but the mark was gone and unfortunately I made the problem worse. I hobbled in to Sacramento, stressed, but made it OK.
The package included plates, stickers, T-shirts, and other stuff.
The next day on the official start of day one Jerry and Emile fixed the ignition timing. I’m still not sure it’s totally right.
I stayed at The Inn off Capitol Park. It was very nice and had a comfortable bed with a very small bathroom. I never thought I would find a bathroom smaller than the one I have at home.
At the Inn off Capital Park all the rooms faced a meeting room instead of the outside of the building.
I’m sorry I was too stressed to take pictures at the Presidio Yacht Club. Now some might think the Presidio Yacht Club is a fancy place. From the name you might think there are people there with navy blue blazers and cravats and there would yachts. No. It’s a bar with a partially paved parking lot, but it’s right next to the Golden Gate bridge and you can take lovely pictures.

Re: 2019 Snowball Rally
Official day one of the 2019 Snowball Rally.
There were some lovely cars and even more lovely people. There were a total of 69 cars. We drove some wonderful back roads, including crossing a creek, and ended up at the Biltmore Hotel in Crystal Bay, NV. This is in North Tahoe. They had special parking for us and many hung around far into the night.
Now one might think with the name Biltmore Hotel, that it’s a really fancy place. You will be wrong. It’s old and needs some work, though the rooms are clean, there was hot water for the showers, and a good traditional breakfast.

Re: 2019 Snowball Rally
More pictures from official day one. They said the creek was around 6 inches deep.

2019 Snowball Rally Day 2 - The Dazed & Bloodshot Limp to the Awards
The Biltmore Hotel may be a little rundown, but they have a great traditional breakfast. I had my usual 2 eggs over easy and four pieces of bacon. I think they gave me six pieces of bacon. It was delicious.
Zoomed in from the previous picture.
I didn’t get many pictures except on the bonus loop which we couldn’t complete. Seems kind of hard to drive through a road that is blocked with 3 feet of snow. So we stopped. Had a great time. Went back to the regular route and had a fun time.
For lunch we stopped at the Polka Dot Burger Hut in Quincy. I had one of the specials which was a fried avocado bacon burger. It was amazing.
We then drove back to Sacramento on back roads to the awards banquet at the Freeport Bar and Grill. I highly recommend this restaurant. The staff was friendly and efficient and the food is pretty good too.

Re: 2019 Snowball Rally
2019 Snowball Rally - The Road Home
I hadn’t made a hotel reservation so at 9:30 PM I decided to drive home 364 miles. It wasn’t the smartest thing to do as I got tired the last hour and a half of the trip.
I started having a charging problem with my alternator. When I would turn on the headlights the battery would run down. I stopped three times before I finally got it fixed for the last 200 miles of the trip home. Until I got the problem fixed, in the slow lane with my headlights off and running lights on I would pace a car driving in the next lane using their headlights to light the road. When I needed the lights the battery was charged sufficiently for me to use them.
I should’ve stopped but I couldn’t find a rest area that was open and when you’re a little sleep deprived you’re not thinking straight. I arrived stressed but safely home at 3:45 AM. Our dog Lincoln excitedly greeted me at the door and I crashed for all of three hours.
Monday I took my car to get the leaky tire fixed and found out that it was leaking around the spokes of the wire wheel. This happens with these wheels as they age as they are sealed with a mastic or silicone that wears out. I’ve already had three of the four wheels re-done in the last 6 years. The first wheel right after I bought them because it arrived leaking. I first stopped at an oil change center to put some oil in my transmission. I then proceeded to Pico Wheel in Camarillo. We put my spare on which is good and I went back home. I’ve slept for about 5 hours which is probably why I couldn’t go to sleep that evening and was awake at 2:52 AM in the morning writing a Facebook post.
Despite the stressful times with my car I had a wonderful time. I’m looking forward to doing it again next year.
After I got back our dog Lincoln was still asleep.
As usual, if you want you can view all the pictures.

Thanks for the extensive report, Tanny. It sounds like a fun event.
