British toys are getting a place of their own...

Post by HealeyBN7 »

Finally making some progress on moving the British toys out of the garage into a place of their own. Hope to pour concrete this week.

Here we are looking at their new home (sans concrete and inspection). This is a 6" slab with #4 bar 16" oc. Estimating about 30+yards (three trucks). Should be plenty strong for a few 2,000lb cars. Two 8ft barn doors will provide access from the front. 10 and 12 foot side doors will allow the dirty projects to roll in and out. Hard to see are footings for a porch that wraps around the front.

Standing behind the footings and looking toward the house... Now how far is the bathroom?

This looks like a fun project for the toys. Keep this up with progress shots, I would like to see how that ends up.

Who cares how far the bathroom is? That's going to be a great garage! I'm insanely jealous. 8)

Me too! :)
Better hurry up since I've heard you've recently added another British car to the family...
Not to be impatient, but when are you planning the open house for the forum members? :pimp:

Thanks for the encouragement.

Just passed foundation inspection this morning (YAHOO!!), so concrete will be arriving before the week is finished. Looks like it may now be 40 yards. I think I'll lend my calculator to the finisher.

You bet I will have an open house. Maybe in the spring!

Just keep in mind that I am doing the construction, so the pace is a little slow as real work gets in the way. The good news is lumber prices are very low, so I am likely to place a order as soon as I know what can be salvaged from the forms (2x6 form material gets stripped off and the good ones are used for rafters). If we have good weather over the next few months it should start to look like a building. :D

Next inspection happens when all the framing is complete, windows are installed, roof is sheathed, and shear walls are finished. This is just prior to wrapping the building and making it weather proof.

Well it turned out to require 50 yards. Five full truck loads. So much for estimating?? But, the pour went well. You can see a little more clearly in this shot the garage area vs porch. The porch goes across the front. The left side of this photo. On a pour of this size in T.O. a deputy inspector is required to be on site all day to make sure the steel stays on the job site and the concrete meets the PSI requirements. The deputy also takes concrete samples "cores" during the pour for sending to a lab for testing. I will be continue stripping the forms tomorrow and start my lumber order...loads of fun.

Lumber arrived this week and we (my son, wife and I) started to put up the walls on Friday. The winds were so intense we had to quickly brace the walls to keep them from blowing over. You can see the "porch" area a little clearer now that the main walls are defined. I don't think the dog is too impressed...

With help from Larry  on Sunday, we were able to put up some sheathing and install the door headers (4x12s). There are a few more special order beams to place (porch (6x12s) and a right side header) which should be here before the weekend. I hope to start on stick framing the roof and finish sheathing the exterior walls next weekend. Notice anything new in the yard??

It's a ghost! I bet the thought of parking it indoors and getting to work is part of what's driving you to build this garage so quickly. :D

You bet. I would really like to get the barn weather tight so the Peerless won't have to live under a tarp. Donna made it pretty clear that if I bring home any more project cars, I will be living in the barn as well. I just hate being wet.

With turkey day next week, I should have a lot more construction time. If I didn't need to make money, I would be working on it throughout the week...

Ok I admit I had to look up "diaphanous" before I attempted a reply... Nothing to hide, but at this point the veil is helping the rest of the family adapt to the new member.

Thanks again for such a smooth transaction. Sunday did go well. And thank you for lending me the trailer. I will post a few car shots in a different thread once I get a chance to spend some quality time with the car.

Worked a bit on some of the structural sheathing and first few rafters. Had to fabricate make-shift trusses to set the ridge boards (2x8x20) in place. It's been a while since I have done this. Forgot how much I hated being so far off the ground on a shaky ladder. The next step is to place the remaining rafters in place, square the posts and locate the porch header...

Just so, Steve doesn't kick me off the forum for no vintage motoring content...I ordered new copper gaskets to stop the horrific exhaust leak in the Healey:). The neighbors will be thrilled.

Here is a post Thanksgiving update.... Hope everyone had a nice turkey day - we did.

On Friday Larry came by and we hoisted the (6x10x14) porch headers in place. What a job. Talk about heavy. It didn't help that they were rain soaked. The roof rafters are all now snug and tight. Just need to add the lookouts for the roof rafters on each end (the rafters that hang over the gables). You can see in this photo that I started to lay out some of the porch rafters. Don't worry if things look wacky, all the tails will need a final trimming. After some blocking is installed I can start sheathing the roof, then move on to the siding.

Got the exhaust gaskets in the Healey replaced, and sent off some photos and specs to the UK for Peerless body panels. With the strong dollar it might be a good time to strike on UK parts.

So busy on the barn that I didn't have time for a quick Healey trip around the block:(

Maybe next weekend...

Thank you :)

I didn't get a chance to work in the barn too much last week - spent half the weekend traveling to Chicago, then...freezing. Got back last night.

Today, after blocking the rafters, we installed a few boards of shiplap around the perimiter, and decked the roof with OSB...well the front half. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I'll start working on the back half and before long the "framing" will be complete. Leaves are everywhere.

The second photo is taken from the roof of the barn looking back at the back house. We will probably take out a part of the hedge to you can see the barn. Right now it is hepling to hide my handywork.

I think I am the only one in the country with a construction project underway. :)
