Goodwood Revival 2009

Post by HealeyBN7 »

Thought you all would enjoy a few photos from Goodwood this year. The theme this year was very '60s. Prizes for best mini skirt
This shot sets the tone...

Like last year we sent a considerable amount of time in the parking lot, but after the 200th Aston Martin it was time to stroll inside.

Oh here is where you park your historically significant Healey's. The 100S's in the background all had full racing documentation. Hard to see in this photo, but the 100S on the far right was owned by Vincent Sardi. I recognized it by the vents cut into the apron to resemble a smile. On the far right is Donald Healey's personal car. It is a 100 coupe. Very nice looking car by the way, but it would be hard to give up the fold down windscreen. The Healey Silverstone was owned by Briggs Cunningham and fitted with a 400HP Cadillac engine. Not pictured on the left was the Healey 4000, with a Rolls Royce engine and widened 6 inches.

A period rally Healey is realy a beast. Hard to believe Pat Moss drove one. This example was driven by the Morley brothers.

I took this shot for Larry and Steve. There was some scraps of information laying on the windshield about this car competing in a long French race with a droopy nose. Thought you two might know about it (DRX 255 C). All three of the MG guys there seemed excited to see it. :)

I spent too much time photographing this fully restored race carriage. 25 years from now are we going to photograph big square semi trailers with awnings?

Goodwood vintage race rule require that the transportation of any cylinder head components including manifolds can only be carried while wearing a safari hat.

Oh yeah...forgot to mention that there were races. This last race of the day ended after sunset. And it was exciting. The Healey led most of the race and on the last corner just went off into the gravel and got passed. There is just something magical about watching cars lap the track with their headlights on. Could it be that I spent too much youth running my slotcars with the lights off?

Yeah!
You guys obviously don't fully appreciate how nice a roof-less car is - especially if combined with mini skirts - when you're driving a truck.
In baseball, running into someone is apparently a "collision".
But doing the same thing in a car somehow makes it an "accident".

They are great pictures from the Goodwood Revival. They really bring out the flavor of the event. this is an event that I've been promising myself for some time. One of the few good reasons to go back to England.
As far as an open top GT40 is concerned, it's no longer a GT40. GT means a closed car, and 40 is the foof height in inches. Isn't it??

Malcolm,

An oxymoron... The race book called it a Ford GT40 Roadster. I think this was the car that competed at 1965 Targa Florio. I don't think it was a prototype, but clearly very few GT40 were produced sans roof. There is some question as to why the roof was removed as in the end it did not save weight and the aerodynamics suffered.

Dean, fantastic photos, thank you! Like Malcolm, this is something I've promised myself that I'll see some day. It's my kind of event for sure! I also agree about cars racing with the lights on. There's something romantic about it - reminds me of the big endurance races of the 60's.

Don't be bashful about posting more of those great photos! ;)

Oh, and the MGB is a rather famous one, having raced LeMans with a "Long nose" snout for increased aerodynamics. Here's a photo of the car, being tweaked by Syd Enever, the designer of the MGB.

And here's a sister car, driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges...

With Steve's encouragement, I sorted through and selected some of Donna's photos to share. This year we both had cameras. She focused on the the people, and I waited for them to move out the way...Priorities. But in the end two cameras contributed to marital bliss:)

Here is your author checking out yet another Aston Martin. The sheer quantity and quality of Astons was amazing. I had not realized that there were so many variations in the DB 4-6 models. We got to the point where we could spot the model based on the tail lights or rear quarter window from across the lot.

Here is a few more... I promise to look for the car shots. But I would have to tell you that Goodwood if probably 40% cars and 60% people. As for watching the races, while the venue is spectacular there is not really a great place to sit and see a good percentage of the track.

So, you think these guys are there to settle a score?

Here is a pure car guy shot. A recreation of a vintage Jaguar shop. Too bad some of the details are lost in the file compression. The Lucas fuses, oils, etc all added to the look/feel.

The military display included these guys that were firmly transported back to WW2. I don't have any shots of the Vulcan that flew by a few times, but that delta wing monster blocked the sun and was an incredible sight. I don't think the UK has the same safely standards when it comes to air shows.

Thanks for sharing the great pics, Dean.
I'd prefer the people-less ones, too, but as you pointed out, the people seem to be a big part of the gig.
And if being amongst people is on the program, my favorite would've been to be piled into that Mini, somewhere in the center of them all.

See, I waited for her to get out of the way:) Unfortunately I don't know too much about it. Maybe you guys can fill in the details. The trouble with Goodwood is even if you don't have attention deficit tendencies, you find yourself bouncing ahead without fully understanding what is in the viewfinder. I did a little better in the parking lot.

Hi,
That's a 1952 ex works Le Mans Jaguar C-type. They gave them extra streamlining for 1952, but unfortunately it was unsuccessful and all the works cars retired with overheating problems. Some said that the extra streamlining compromised the airflow through the radiator, but no-one outside the works really knows. Next year they went back to the original shape, and won!

Seeing that Malcolm jumped in so quickly to identify the 1952 Jag Streamliner, I thought I would start posting some more challenging images from our Sunday stroll through the parking lot.

The way this is going to work is like this. I am going to post one or two shots of the same car. If it is identified, I'll post a another. If after a few days the group is either stumped or bored, I'll identify it to the best of my ability and post another. We'll know when to stop.

Let's start with a little one. Here goes....

Hi,
I'm pretty sure that is a Bristol 405. I know the 404 is a two door coupe, and I'm sure the four door version is the 405. Anyway it's a Bristol for sure. Great cars, they were produced by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, and were basically a pre-war BMW 328 with Bristol aerodynamic bodywork. This was part of the post war reparation from Germany.

I would imagine that Malcolm is right, as usual.
But Gene should only get half a point, since he spelled Messerschmidt incorrectly.

Score is:
1 - Gene (no worries on the 1/2 point deduction for spellin', as it was good enough to fool the judge)
1 - Malcolm

You got it like that Bristol 405. I am guessing it has the mini BMW 6) :)

Although it looks has many unusual angles, it was one brilliant car in person. Hard to notice in my photos, but there is a storage compartment behind the front wheel well opening. The spare is on the of the two sides.
